Amazing toddler hack #2: Three more magic words – who wants to?

They say there is a silver lining to every cloud, and I’m beginning to discover there is a silver lining to the most desperately testing toddler times – the birth and discovery of some ingenious toddler behaviour tips and hacks! First I brought to you “The rule is...” and now in this toddler parenting tips series there’s “Who wants to?”

After a seriously difficult week marked by defiance at every turning, I was beginning to nickname my 2 year old Miss No-No. Getting to do anything was becoming painfully boring and arduous at every turn…getting her to put her shoes on, tidy up, get dressed, have a bath etc etc…basically there was no point in asking her to do anything at anytime..until another three magic words slipped out of my mouth…

WHO WANTS TO?

Who wants to put their shoes on and head out?

Who wants to have a lovely bath?

Who wants to help mummy hang up the washing?

Who wants to eat some lunch?

Who wants to not be a massive grumpy shit bag and actually do the things you won’t let me do for you anyway?

OK, so this didn’t have a 100% success rate as sometimes the answer would be Mummy (errr..no I don’t think so), but more often than not, it was my daughter opting herself in.

Hurrah! Huffy toddler teenager sulky defiance suddenly reduced by about 75% I’d say.

Now who out there has a toddler they want to try this out on? I’d love to hear how you get on with this hack…

  1. I tried the ‘the rule is’ and it worked about 60% of the time so I am def going to be trying out this one! I think I *may* have overused the rule is though, as it’s becoming less effective! Becky x #KCACOLS

    • Yeah you have to be careful of not over using it…I think the key is to have a rota of ones you can flick out (I have another one up my sleeve I’ll write about soon) and so if they all work 60% of the time then that’s got to be a good thing!!

  2. Ooh I’m going to try this! Arjun isn’t talking properly yet but he’ll get my drift! Especially at meal times! Thanks for linking up to #BabyBrainMonday x

  3. I’d love to type a lengthy comment but excuse me while I run off to try this on my 11yo, 8yo and 5yo ha ha. Blooming genius! Wish I’d thought of that years ago when they were at the toddler stage. Thanks for linking to #BabyBrainMonday

    • Bloody hell it still works at those ages? Score! Probably won’t work on mine in about a week or so I’m guessing haha x

  4. I haven’t put either of these to the test yet as I’m constantly being distracted by the behavioural issues of a slightly older child!! Will have to give it a go next time my three year old plays up though if these statistics are anything to go by 🙂 Thanks for linking Talya #thetruthabout

  5. I love to hear about these kind of tips – of course every child responds differently but often the way you ask a child to do something can make all the difference! Thank you for sharing #KCACOLS

  6. This is a great post Talya as your kids will always think that what you are asking them to do is a fantastic idea because you are so enthusiastic about it!! We tried this at home and it worked most of the times but of course there were times that it was a ‘no no no..thank you” kind of answer! LOL But if we are persistent it could get better. Thank you so much for linking up with me at #KCACOLS. I hope you join me again next Sunday! 🙂 xx

    • It definitely helps quite a lot of the time which is better than not a lot of the time! Thanks so much for choosing this as your fave post hon x
