For me, Chinese New Year is the perfect reason to get your family discovering some yummy, family-friendly meals, cooked up at home, even if you have absolutely nothing to do with anything Chinese…purely because Chinese food is simply YUMMY!
The great thing about Chinese cuisine is that there is just so much choice in the supermarkets these days, that if you don’t have the time to cook from scratch, you can still create a slap up Chinese spread of dishes for your very own dinner table. But in this post, there will be a combination of the two.
And so off we went to ALDI to get prepared…………..
And now for the meal ideas to get you feeling all in the Chinese spirit!
This is a great, quick and cost effective dish that absolutely melts in your mouth and takes only ten minutes to make! Although this recipe calls for mince pork, you can just as easily and tastily make it with pork belly (hurrah! available in store) and trust us…is all the more better for it! Serve up with some Oriential Stir Fry Mix and steamed rice. Delicious!
Meal idea 2: Sweet and sour chicken with egg fried rice
You can’t have a Chinese without sweet and sour chicken, and the secret to getting the dish top notch is to deep fry the chicken breast pieces in corn or potato starch and then add in a pre-made sauce (we love ALDI’s Sweet & Sour Cooking sauce)….and not forgetting those extra pineapple chunks! Being the year of the rooster of course this one is perfect as a chicken meal. Serve up with some egg fried rice, stir fried green beans to round off and a side of Vegetable Spring Rolls which you can also pick up in store.
Meal idea 3: Lemon chicken with egg noodles
One of our favourite from-scratch at home recipes has to be Lemon Chicken (see the recipe here). It is just too good not to make! Seriously lip smacking, serve it up with some stir fried Straight to Work Noodles and veggies.
Meal idea 4: Stir fried beef in oyster sauce
There’s nothing like the savoury sweetness of oyster sauce (errr just don’t tell the kids it’s got anything to do with real oysters!), but this makes for a fab, tasty and super quick family meal with the use of ALDI’s Oyster & Spring Onion stir fry sauce, then add in some Straight to Wok Noodles, shredded Chinese cabbage and beansprouts and a side of stir fried baby corn and that’s a Chinese dinner on the table in under 10!
Meal idea 5: Hoisin and garlic salmon
For a quick and easy salmon dish, you can use the Asian Specialities Hoisin and Garlic Stir Fry Sauce and instead use it not in the wok, but as a ready made glaze for salmon. Bake in the oven as you normally would do salmon, and serve with some utterly delicious pineapple fried rice. If you’re feasting over the weekend, you can really push the boat out and serve alongside half a crispy aromatic duck, which you can also buy in selected stores. DELISH!
Gung Hay Fat Choy everybody!
