Oh there she goes again….banging on about the fact that she is turning 40 again this year! But seriously, I do have to keep it saying it so that it finally sinks in that I am actually turning 40 this year. Gulp! Although I have tried to sidestep any form of celebrations for the past decade, it would be rude not to have a big bash to celebrate my turning 40. But I need a little help deciding on what 40th birthday party themes I should go for.
That’s why I’ve teamed up with illooms® – world’s first LED latex balloons fitted with an integrated LED that illuminates the balloon and glows for up to 15 hours – in this post where you help me decide which 40th birthday party themes I should go for. Below are the front runners….Let me know which of the below 40th birthday party themes I should go for with a vote in the comments section below!
Moulin Rouge
I’ve always secretly wanted to be a can can girl. It’s something about those long legs furiously kicking, feathers and bustiers. Plus there’s the whole magical spell that the Moulin Rouge movie cast on me the first time I saw it. Think burlesque theme, a giant windmill, drapes of pearls, red lighting, feather vases and black velvet draping and heart illooms®. If you really want to go all out, you could even treat yourself to a romantic limo experience with Limo Find to top things off.
Daytime Rave
For something totally different, I thought about reliving the raver days of my youth. Featuring plenty of neon, glow sticks, necklaces and bracelets; strobe lights and lava lamps, tie die-esque ballons from illooms® , party streamers in keeping with the overall “glow” theme.
Flashback to 80s
The ultimate in nostalgia, this is a chance to get seriously cheesy with legwarmers, spandex, shoulder pads and more. With iconic 1980s movies like Ghost Busters and The Goonies projected in the background and walls adorned with classic posters of quintessential 80’s pop star this would be one totally rad party!
1950s Sock Hop
As a child growing up I was absolutely obsessed with Grease and the cool world of guys and chicks, diners and dances it portrayed. Inflatable instruments, jukeboxes and Cadillac and soda shop cut-outs, Elvis wigs and pink beehives are the order of the day here. And of course, you’ll have to get everyone to compete in a dance contest ending with a balloon drop!
Great Gatsby
There’s always been a little piece of me that would have loved to have lived it up in the glamorous parties of the roaring 20s. Again when it comes to 40th birthday party themes this one also features pearls and feathers heavily (you can see a trend here), along with flapper girls, gold foil curtains, gold and silver illooms® in abundence in clusters and art deco-inspired backdrops.
So at the moment these are my five shortlisted 40th birthday party themes but the question is which one do I go for??! Please leave a comment below with your vote and help me decide! Thank you!
My thoughts on illooms®
While trying out some of the illooms® range in preparation for my 40th, one thing I can say for sure is that they are such fun! Not only do they add a really unique element to your would-be party, but the kids absolutely love them. My daughter’s look of pure joy when she discovered they lit up was pure joy making them the perfect eye-catching addition to any party…whether for the young or old! You can check out the full range from illooms® here.
So are they the ultimate party must-have? I would say… yes! – there’s an illoom for every occasion. From luxurious gold and silver for that glitzy NYE bash and magical unicorns for a party to remember, through to kaleidoscopic marble swirls or even alien inspired.
Not only do they add a really unique element to your would-be party, but the kids absolutely love them. My daughter’s look of pure joy when she discovered they lit up was priceless making them the perfect eye-catching addition to any party…whether for the young or old!
They are so easy to use that my six-year-old happily got to work with them. You just hold the top of the balloon with one hand and pull the tab out of the balloon neck. Inflate the illoom to the recommended size using a balloon pump and the inflation band (included in the pack) and tie with a knot. And that’s it!
You can check out the full range from illooms® here. Stockists include: Card Factory, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda (selected stores), RRP from £1.

These are super cool I’ll definitely be getting some for my sons first birthday as he loves lights 🙂
I absolutely love the look of these! They look so effective!
I think the 80’s throwback would be my choice for a themed party I think x
The 80’s throwback would bring back happy memories for me!
Daytime rave for me I reckon. How cool are these balloons though!!
Either raving or 80’s would be my choices. Turning 49 is pretty cool. I wish I could’ve partied hard but I was 38 weeks pregnant so I just ate cake, lots of cake. Have an amazing party. The balloons will certainly make it.
I didn’t really celebrate my 40th (although I was at Britmums), i really need to up my game for my 50th
I love this!! there are some fab themed ideas here. Love the sound of the fun daytime rave – very cool xx
These are good ideas. I need to start thinking about this. I will be having a 40th in a few years! Exciting! Those balloons look great. I think i’d go for the 80’s party.
From your shortlist, I think I’d like the Great Gatsby most. I had a circus theme party for my 40th two years ago.
Flashback to 80s for me I think would be the most fun
I like the idea of the moulin rouge theme, as this seems very different.
Love the Great Gatsby theme – I’m a history obsessed person and the 20s are just as fascinating as the the tenth century lol!
The 80s DEFINITELY!! Fancy dress, all those pop and power ballads! It’ll be fun!
These look like a lot of fun. Perfect for a party!
What great themes. It would have to be the 80s flashback for me.
its the Flashback to 80s for my vote, I probably still hve my 80 clothes still in the loft
I’d have to go for the daytime rave
I would love to do Back to the 80s as I was born in the 80s and Back to the future is my favourite film!
I think either the ’80s or rave themes would be fun. Lots of scope for dressing up and great music for dancing to.
