I often hear people say there’s no point investing in making things in your home look nice when you have children in the mix. Sure, the children may get handprints up the wall and spill icky stuff on the sofas but that doesn’t mean you have to give up your sense of personal style. With that said, here are some interior design tricks you can use to transform your family home whilst still keeping it child-friendly.
Enhance natural light
Having natural light in your home helps both your body and mind. Use light colours on your walls and furniture, and use mirrors and reflective surfaces to amplify and make the light shine throughout your home.
Add decor pieces
Add accessories that resonate with the personality of your family, be it quirky, minimalistic or luxe. These add character and tie together the design elements in your home. You can turn a house into your home with a variety of home decor styles. Think wall art, mirrors, and accessories that give any room an instant upgrade, and home accents that add a finishing touch to your rooms.
Use different textures
Use textures to add depth to your space. Knit throws, woven rugs and wicker baskets are some easy ways to introduce texture in your home while keeping it comfy.
Experiment with wallpaper
Did you know that wallpapering your ceiling is actually becoming a bit of a thing? Perfect because it’s out of the way of sticky hands. You can also look at bringing wallpaper into your house in the children’s rooms. Using wallpaper for children can be a great way of bringing some colour and energy into their space.
Use rugs
Rugs add a level of comfort to any space. Use them with furniture to define the space or even create easy play areas for toddlers with comfy rugs and storage for toys.
Use sectional sofas
Change up your living room style and add a sectional sofa. Sectionals are great for lounging or conversation, and allow enough space for family movie nights and having friends over.
Change out your window treatments
Revamping your window treatments not only change up the style, but can also be a great opportunity to add more colour, patterns and texture to the space.
Open up space
Open up the main areas like living and kitchen to allow easy access and viewability across your home and to make it appear larger. This is also useful to watch young children or continue conversations with your family and friends while cooking.
Add in a play area
Give your family space for the things you enjoy, be it a game of table tennis, endless hours of Lego or board games. Game nights can also be a great way to spend time together as a family.
Bring in plants
Houseplants are a great addition to any home. They help improve the air indoors and also brighten up your space. If you have young children or pets, make sure the plants you choose are safe for them.
Create a focal point
Focal points draw your eye towards them immediately. Add a hobby or feature wall, art pieces, antiques or even plants to create a space that can be a conversation starter.
Add a reading nook
Make your home more comfy by adding a reading nook. You can display your books and a few decor items here, and put in comfortable seating to lounge and read in.
Add metallics
Use metallics like silver, gold, and copper as accents to add a touch of glam to your home. You can use them on lighting, frames and even furniture.
Use unique pendant lights
Pendant lights instantly change the way a room looks. Look for unique styles that fit your home and use them near your dining or breakfast area to change up the overall look.
Use artworks
Choose artworks that make you happy, be it an abstract piece or traditional artwork or even colorful dog prints. These make your home a lot more bright and cheerful and make for interesting additions to space.

I love the idea of having a reading nook! That’s so cute!
I would love a reading nook! Like maybe a window seat with a snuggly cushion to read. We also have loads of plants too. My husband is obsessed!
I never thought about changing my home décor when I had my kids. The toys stayed in the front room or in their bedrooms and they were such a range of colours I would not be able to match my décor without the toys messing up the colour theme lo! The girls had painted walls and themed boarders in their rooms but that was it. Love the idea of a reading nook. Maybe one day 🙂
I’ve seen some brilliant ceiling wallpaper decor. I love the idea of having a really statement piece that you can look at while in bed
