My 5 best healthy foods for baby

Newborns today, need to be fed day and night and their health is based on our decisions. For this reason, it is crucial for parents to choose foods which contain lots of nutrients and are healthy for their little one. There are a lot of healthy, baby-friendly options to choose from, but only a few of them stand out from the pack, are loaded with essential nutrients and are delicious and easy to prepare.

I believe that the best first food for babies is breast milk. It is full of fatty acids, nutrients, proteins and antibodies. Breast milk is a truly perfect and complete food for babies. But, at some point, your baby will need solid food. Usually, this happens when your baby is about six months old but you should talk to your pediatrician, only he/she can better tell you if your baby is ready for solids or not.

In addition to breast milk, here I’ve listed the 5 top best healthy foods for baby that are my favourite and which I have used the most when my son started eating solids:

1. Avocados

Let’s start this with a food that most of the parents don’t use enough as a base for baby foods. Avocados are often thought of as a vegetable but they actually are a fruit. It is one of my most used foods because it contains more nutrients than any other food on their category.

Avocados have the highest protein content of any fruit and are rich in a “good” type of fat – monounsaturated fat -which helps the body to prevent heart disease. It is recommended to just serve a little on the side with other recommended foods because they are high in fat and can quickly make your baby feel full. Wash the outside, remove the peel, mash well and make sure to only serve babies ripe avocados.

2. Squash

Squash is a great source of vitamins A and C, is sweet and has a creamy texture which babies like a lot when they are starting solid foods. One great idea of serving squash, recommended by pediatricians, is by combining it with a little cilantro, red pepper and garbanzo beans, which are all great for babies.

3. Broccoli

Broccoli is another great food to give to your baby. It is a great source of vitamin C and also contains beta-carotene, iron (which is necessary for your baby when he/she begin eating solids), potassium, fibre and folic acid. It is recommended to steam or microwave the broccoli because the boiling water cuts its vitamin C in half. Also, if your baby doesn’t like broccoli very much at the beginning, you can mix it with sweet potato or butternut squash.

4. Bananas

Bananas are one of the most used foods by parents because they are full of carbohydrates, fibre and are naturally sweet. They are very easy to prepare because they are usually served as mashed but some babies can also chew chopped bananas.

They are naturally sweet makes them very delicious for babies but be careful because giving your baby to many bananas can make them used to sweet flavours foods right away, which it is not a good thing for their health.

5. Dark Leafy Greens and Vegetables

Leafy greens are a great source of iron and folate. Spinach is the best-known food of this group but there are a lot of other varieties, including kale, collard greens, and chard.

To sum up, I have included a lot of healthy, green products because I think it is very important to teach your baby healthy eating habits as soon as you can. It is normal for your baby to like more sweet foods such as bananas but eventually they will start to like broccoli and other healthy green foods too.

Moreover, you can read the infographic down below to learn more about other Healthy Foods for your babies as well as some foods you should avoid feeding to your baby.

  2. Hi

Amazing post! Although I have heard or I have even read many of the blogs you’ve shared with us.

When it comes to making baby food, I’m a moderate. As a full-time working mom, I often don’t have the energy to complete one more task at home – the piles and piles of laundry, the mildewing shower and the dog poop in the yard are enough.

What I’ve found that works for me is to concentrate on spicing up store bought baby food with a variety of flavorings and then focusing my homemade efforts on those fruits and veggies not commonly produced by baby-food makers.

  3. Thank you for the information! it was really helpful, now, i’ll use avocados more, because baby really likes them:)

  5. This is great information for new parents. It is sometimes hard to start on solids because baby may reject the purees from time to time.
I found that keeping up with milk during the introduction of semi-solid foods is of utmost importance as well, as at the beginning starting solids is exploratory and almost a game.
    Great post!
