How to reduce allergies in the home

Having allergies can make a person feel miserable for weeks or months at a time. Reducing the presence of allergens in your home will give you a place to recover from the outside air. Allergen-free air will also help make your family healthier. You’ll breathe better once you try these five approaches to reduce allergies in the home

Bathe Your Pets Regularly

Pet dander can cause serious allergies that keep people sneezing for hours after they’ve left your home. You can keep pet dander under control by washing your pets every week. If your pet won’t tolerate weekly baths, then try doing the chore every two weeks.

Baby shampoo works well for most dogs and cats. If you don’t have any baby shampoo, you can use a mixture of white vinegar and dish washing soap. If you know that you will have to go longer than two weeks between baths, use a dandruff remover spray that will control most of your pet’s dander.

Use an Air Purifier With a HEPA Filter

An air purifier with a HEPA filter will trap allergens, so they can’t reenter your home’s air. Keep in mind that not all HEPA filters work as well as others. Look for air purifiers with a design that captures 99 percent of allergens like pollen, mold spores, dust, and pet dander. For more information on the current research into Air Purifiers, see this link.

Minimize the Clutter in Your Home

It’s easy for clutter to accumulate in homes. When you have a busy schedule, you can’t always find time to make space in your home or put things away immediately after using them. At first, you might find yourself storing items in drawers. Over time, though, the clutter can outgrow your drawer until it takes over a corner or entire room.

Minimizing clutter makes the air cleaner because it minimizes the number of places that allergens can hide. When you get rid of the clutter in your house, you eliminate places for dust and other allergens to accumulate.

Vacuum Floors at Least Once Per Week

Dust, pet fur, dirt, and other allergens may permeate the air, but they eventually fall to the floor. Vacuuming your floors at least once per week will remove the impurities that cause many allergies. Resist the temptation to use carpet powders when you vacuum. Some of the products cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. If you must use a powder to remove stubborn odors, choose baking soda.

Keep Windows and Doors Closed

The outdoors is full of pollen that can cause allergic reactions. You might feel tempted to open windows and doors on pleasant days, but doing so will make your indoor air less healthy. It’s especially important to keep windows and doors closed at night, when pollen often settles to the ground and has a chance to enter your home during its fall.

There is a good chance that one of these tricks will reduce allergies in the home. Even if you can’t eliminate allergens from your indoor air, you can significantly reduce the presence of dander, dust, and pollen. Doing so will help you breathe more easily.
