I am a huge sushi lover and it has to be said that if I could…I would happily inhale sushi every day of my life. So when we were invited to check out YO! Sushi’s Mini Ninja Sushi School I thought….hmmmm a chance to potentially convert my mini me, into a mini ninja sushi lover and maker? It had to be done.
So off we went to our local Yo!, in Kingston’s Bentall Centre to see if we had a sushi chef in the making.
A unique way to keep the little’s entertained over the long weeks of the summer holidays, the class promised to be a great mix of fact and fun. Mini budding chefs in attendance were taken through three recipes during the hour-long class: Cucumber Maki, Salmon Nigiri and California rolls and I have to say that our YO! chef Monica was not only fantastic at leading the group but also at providing hands on help to those who needed it (particularly the younger ones – yup this was us with my daughter being four!)).
It was a great way for children to be immersed in a different cuisine, discover a range of Japanese ingredients and learn the art of sushi rolling.
I have to admit….it was definitely challenging but isn’t everything worth learning? I thought it was a very nice touch that at the end of each class all the children received a certificate, chef’s hat and crayons in their very special YO! bag along with all the dishes made on the day which were packaged up to take away with the recipe cards for more sushi adventures at home.
I was also amazed at just how much sushi the children made – it wasn’t just one of each but quite a few of each….enough to feed both myself and the little for lunch. Mmmmm….itadakimass! (that’s bon appetite in Japanese, you know).
Classes are available in 50 sites across the UK, hosted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11am from 1st – 30th August and cost £15 per child.. Recommended for ages 4 up.
