Planning a summer party: Things you need to think about

planning a summer party

*This is a collaborative post

The temperatures are getting warmer, the days getting longer, and despite the deluge of rain we had today, we’re all starting to feel a little bit more in the mood to have some fun….all of which adds up to the need to have a summer party!

Summer parties are a fab way of getting friends together to enjoy the summer vibe, and so once you’ve decided that you’re going to HAVE a party, here are some other things you need to think about.

This is basically the deciding factor that will influence all other facets of the party planning. Are you on a shoestring? Have you got a little cash to splash? Either way, it’s a good idea to draw up a budget however simple it may be so you know what (if anything!) you’re working with.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to venues at summer time – whether it’s your back garden if you’ve one big enough, a picnic in the park, a rooftop terrace somewhere or a cool cafe with a lovely outdoor area. Spend some time looking at summer party venues to get some inspo and suss out the options.

Must haves and no-nos

Is there anything you’d really love to have at your party? Anything that’s a deal breaker for you? Get them clear in your mind so that you can throw the party you really want to.

Set a date

No, not a couple of weeks before either! Ideally you want to set a date a couple of months in advance to ensure you have plenty of time to get the venue sorted, get invites out and get organised for the big P!

Not everyone is into themes, but it can always amp up the fun factor. Take some time scrolling through Pinterest to get some inspo and work out how you can bring the theme to life within budget.

Activities and entertainment

Have you got any friends you can rope in with some talent…a DJ, a musician, a singer? Maybe you’ll want to schedule a couple of ice breakers to get the party going? Or maybe you’d prefer to skip all of the above altogether!

Write a guest list, and decide what you’ll cap it at. Then get those invites out!

Food and drink

Everyone knows that food and drink can either make or break a party. Are you going to take it all on yourself? or get people to bring a pot luck? And of course, don’t forget about allergies!

  1. I remember long ago deciding to throw a surprise BBQ party for my husband’s birthday, I phoned friends, bought food and drinks and then 2 days before my husband announced that he had arranged his own BBQ party the day before mine , none of our friends wanted to be the one to let on incase they spoiled the surprise in the end it was raining cats and dogs on both days so we put a tarpaulin over the BBQ and ate indoors!
