Reading Eggs review: An excellent resource for back to school in 2023

Today I wanted to share our Reading Eggs review. This year, my daughter is starting Reception year and over the summer we decided to give her a little helping hand in learning to read in preparation, with the help of Reading Eggs.

Reading Eggs is an online programme which has been created by a highly experienced team of primary school teachers, writers and developers to help children become fluent and proficient readers.

Sounds just the ticket!

The multi-award winning early learning resource is billed to support your child’s learning to read journey with carefully designed online reading games and activities that are easy to follow, self-paced, and highly engaging for young learners….right in the heart of your home where they feel the most confident, happy and supported.

I have always been a big believer in the importance of reading from a young age, and am in the camp that it is our duty as parents to help support our children on that journey. However in this busy life we lead, actually facilitating that beyond simply just trying to foster a love of reading in your children can be quite challenging beyond a daily book at bedtime.

But with Reading Eggs, it has become part of our daily routine….

Reading Eggs review: So how does it work?

Learn essential reading skills

Children complete animated online lessons where they learn essential reading and phonics skills. There are a variety of fun activities within each lesson which provides the repetition needed for these skills to become part of the child’s long term memory.

Read books online

Children gain confidence by reading online books that only contain words they have already studied in the programme. There are over 2000 levelled books in the Reading Eggs programme.

Earn rewards

Children earn golden eggs as rewards for the progress they make. They can use these eggs to buy fun reward games and items for their avatar or house. Children also earn a certificate at the end of each map, which can be printed.

Complete quizzes

After 10 lessons, children complete a quiz. This provides you with a report of what your child is learning. Children can repeat the online lessons as many times as they like to reinforce key learning concepts.

So how has Reading Eggs worked for us?

My daughter is four and so it only at the very early stages of her reading and literacy journey but so far, she has been hugely engrossed in the programme on a daily basis, making her way through the different stages at a steady rate. The map she has been working her way around is a great way of giving them a visual representation of their progress, which she responded to really well.

The animation and games make it really engaging for her, and constant reward and recognition that the programme provides throughout has not only really incentivised her but also has really left her feeling great about the whole process of learning to read. It’s had a massive knock on effect during the day – throughout the day she will be trying to read and recognise words she sees.

As a preschooler going into school, I couldn’t think of a better way of getting her school ready and on the right track when it comes to reading and literacy and would definitely recommend Reading Eggs for this age group upwards to help power them feel confident in their literacy abilities for their age group. I plan to keep going with our Reading Eggs journey to help support my daughter throughout her Reception reading and literary journey.

The fabs news is you can too because Reading Eggs are offering a fantastic chance to try the programme out with a free four week subscription at the link below xoxo. And if you enjoyed this review why not check on our thoughts on the book subscription service Reading Chest.

  1. Wish this was available when my two were reception age….actually, maybe not for my daughter but this would have been awesome for my ASD son. What an excellent idea.

  2. I’ve heard good reviews about Reading Eggs. If T were younger, I’d definitely consider this. At 7, she’s a really good reader and is reading Harry Potter books at the moment 🙂

  3. This looks like such a helpful website! I’ll need to bear it in mind when H is a little bit older!

  4. This sounds really good – I think the fact it has been developed by primary teachers is a huge bonus as it means they are being taught via the app the same way schools teach reading x

  5. We used reading eggs for Isaac and he did really well with it. Eliza didn’t need it bit would certainly use it again if Sebby does
