REVIEW: Improving your mood and sleep with 5-HTP

As someone who has struggled with sleep problems and mood fluctuations related to my ongoing hormonal issues, I was recently intrigued to learn about 5-HTP, a mood boosting supplement which is known to improve sleep and mood.

5-HTP is a naturally occurring compound in the brain and is the precursor to serotonin, otherwise known as the happy hormone. It’s reportedly of benefit to those who struggle with anxiety, depression and sleep issues as it helps to promote a number of beneficial effects including improving mood and reducing anxiety.

By increasing the amount of 5-HTP, the precursor molecule to serotonin, you effectively increase the levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is also one of the most important brain chemicals in regulating the sleep/wake cycle.

I was sent some high quality 5-HTP by Focus Supplements, which is made of all natural ingredients extracted from the Griffonia simplicifolia plant and essentially then turned into vegetarian capsules. On receiving, I started talking one capsule of 5-HTP which was about a week ago, each evening around half an hour to an hour before bed time with a light carbohydrate snack and so far, I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in the quality of my sleep….with less night wakings plus I would say that I feel like I’ve had a more balanced, and relaxed outlook…despite all the stresses of back to school!!!

It is only recommended that you take 5-HTP for a few months only because it can have an impact on other neurotrasmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine, but if you’re looking to get yourself out of a mental, emotional or sleep rut, I would say it’s definitely worth a shot to help ease the crazy.

*This is a collaborative post however all opinions are my own.

  1. These could be really good short term for people struggling with sleep. I’m not sure I would use them though, but I don’t like pumping my body with different supplements unless desperately needed.

  2. I’ve never really suffered from sleep problems (apart from being kept awake by my kids!) but I’m sure if I did then I’d try anything to help.
