Zog live on stage review: A delightful family treat

If there is one thing that my daughter and I love to do together above all things it’s taking a trip to the theatre (we actually also recently got into golfing thanks to golfaccessoriesreviews.com). And when an adaptation of one of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s books has a run at the theatre, then a trip to the theatre is absolutely on the cards!

Zog on stage

We were so excited that the world premiere stage adaptation of Zog, based on the book by Julia Donaldson with illustrations by Axel Scheffler, kicked off it’s 6 month UK tour at one of our local theatres –  Rose Theatre Kingston.

For those of you that don’t know the story of Zog (where have you been?!), the story centres around Zog, a dragon who is large in size, and keen in nature, and on a mission to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know.

Zog tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet – a duel with Gadabout the Great!

A truly magical adaptation

Directed by Mike Shepherd Zog live on stage is an absolute delight from start to finish. A truly magical adaptation, with creative puppetry and  a gorgeous folk score by Johnny Flynn featuring live musicians, drenched in imaginative and enchanting little details that left my five and a half year old and her friend absolutely mesmerised throughout it’s 55 minutes run.

This is the second production we have seen by Freckle Productions – the first being Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales – and yet again we found ourselves totally engrossed in this wonderfully creative production, with plenty of chuckles throughout.

Brilliant fun for all ages

Zog live on stage is brilliant fun for all ages with important messages like believing in yourself, doing what is right for you, and cherishing friendships at its core. If it’s on at a theatre near you, I would definitely recommend going to see it for a family treat. It’s a wonderfully immersive experience which sparks the imagination as well as opening up conversation around important topics and emotions.

Zog is on at Rose Theatre Kingston until Saturday 23rd February.  You can check out the full UK tour schedule for Zog live on stage which runs until 27th July 2019 here.
