Well here we are – 2021 and goodness knows we will all pleased to see the back of 2020! Although there were some positive moments in amongst the mire, it’s an understatement to say that it’s probably one of the most uniquely challenging years most of us will have seen in our lifetimes meaning with many things we will be happy to leave behind this year.

Without doubt there will still be plenty of hurdles to overcome in 2021 especially as we start the year in lockdown 3 plus for many of us – homeschooling – and even worse trying to work while doing so!

So today in this first post of 2021, here are a few suggestions of what to leave behind this year. I don’t know about you – but I can’t wait to kick these to the curb!

Negativity

The amount of negativity swirling around in the world has amassed to extreme amounts, and without question, the media can be blamed for fanning the seemingly insatiable flames. This year, it’s time to say no to negativity. Shut out the doomsayers, don’t let your mind linger on the disasters, stop scrolling through the abyss of gloom.

It takes presence of mind but it can be done – look for the good news, cultivate a daily gratitude practice or compliment exchange, and celebrate your triumphs – however small they might be. Fight the power….we can do this!

Zoom

OMG….if I never had to do another Zoom call again, I would be a very happy person indeed! Sure, it’s great to be connected to people, but after a never-ending slew of quizzes, work calls, conferences and seminars, I can say that I – and probably you also – are officially zoomed out!

Having said that, it’s not like we can completely boot Zoom out of our lives just yet. However, this is the year to use Zoom mindfully. Does that conversation really need to happen on zoom, or could it be a simple email exchange or a regular phone call? Would you even have a call or a meeting about this if we weren’t all stuck in this situation?

2020 was about too many Zoom meetings, not enough mindfulness. 2021 needs to be about more mindfulness, fewer Zoom meetings!

Feeling like you CBA – Can’t Be Arsed

It’s no revelation that the nation’s energy levels have been at an all-time low during the pandemic. With apathy being the order of the day in 2020, I say it’s time to get over being over it, and be done with CBA – a.k.a. can’t be arsed!

Yup have all felt like we are over this or can’t be arsed a million times over in 2020 – wearing face masks, getting dressed, pulling your finger out, and doing some work rather than navel-gazing. The list goes on and then some. We can’t go on like this. Even if this pandemic and its consequences are going to keep on whooping our asses into 2021, we have no option but to get over being over it and bloody well sock it to this calamity where it hurts.

Disappointment

We have all had our fair share of disappointment of late (and it feels like the punches keep coming!), but this is the year to think up new ways of easing the disappointment. Can’t travel? Sign up to a travel subscription box. Feeling down on life right now? Time to reminisce on the good old days and dust off those photo albums and find joy in times past. Yearning for something more? Live in the moment, embrace the micro, and grab what you have on your doorstep with what hands. Looks for the haves, not the have nots in life. That is the only way forward peeps!

Anything that doesn’t serve you

One thing is for sure – we certainly don’t need anything punitive in our life right now. With so many simple pleasures still seeming out of grasp, now more than ever we need to take care of ourselves and those around us. There is nothing wrong with licking our wounds with more than usual me-time or things that make us feel good. In fact, I would go so far as to say that is pretty much compulsory during 2021. So go run that deep bath, and do what you love – because that is as noble a notion as any in these times.

What do you plan to leave behind this year? I’d love to hear in a comment below.
