So you want to know what bloggers do?

what bloggers do

There has recently been a troll at large – of course there always will be – who has been going round asking whether we bloggers don’t have the qualifications to do a “proper job”.

Cue a huge Mexican outrage of wrath and scorn in a world stadium full of bloggers.

Unfortunately, yes there are some bloggers who probably do give us all a bad name for being in the game just to get freebies and massively expensive prams. Shame on your name.

However, the other 99% of us, let it be known – do not blog for these reasons. In addition to that, many bloggers blog as well as holding down a regular job…just to set the record straight. Usually proper qualifications needed for those last time I checked. Others have crafted hugely successful paths for themselves where they don’t even need to hold down a boring 9 – 5 job, and as far as I can say, this isn’t something to be looked down on, but instead applauded.

But for those of you (and perhaps you, little troll are out there reading this too) who are wondering what bloggers really do, let me break it down for you here:

  1. Conceiving, creating, curating and delivering fresh content ideas, much like an editor of any part of an editorial team would do, something you would need some sort of qualification to do.
  2. Negotiating prices, setting fees, and sealing deals, much like any member of a sales team would do, which usually requires some form of qualification to do.
  3. Promoting your own content across a wide variety of marketing platforms, much like all those people hired by huge brands and marketing and PR agencies do who guess what…need qualifications to do so.
  4. Manage, develop and fix the back end of your site, and all technical aspects of your blog meaning your are your own programmer, coder and webmaster and SEO expert….aherm….think those people usually have qualifications to do that too!
  5. Manage your finances and doing the books – taking care of all the nitty gritty that comes with having your own business including issuing invoices, chasing payments, and managing your accounts…which yup, companies usually have a whole accounts department to do.
  6. Relationship manage a diverse array of stakeholders, their needs and expectations which many a company dedicate whole relationship teams and massive databases to….qualifications needed for that too.
  7. Plus about a bajillion other things you can read more about here.

Actually, the purpose of this post wasn’t for me to sit and list 20 things a blogger does in a day but more to say to any trolls, doubters and haters out there who think bloggers are just a bunch of air heads who don’t have the “qualifications to get a proper job” to think very hard before you utter those words again. Ever.

I have racked up more qualifications, skills and experience than I can shake a stick at during my career thus far. I’ve been an Editor in Chief of a leading online lifestyle platform, I’ve worked for one of the world’s leading museums, and I’ve worked across some huge brand marketing accounts during my time before that, not to mention everything else in-between.

Being a blogger is my choice. I have every qualification I need to go out there and bang my head against a wall doing something I hate 9 -5, but I’d much rather be doing what I’m doing right now – doing something I love, and making a living from it. So shoot me.

  1. Blogging is such hard work. It really frustrates me when people think it’s easy to do and that its not a real job or a real career. I wrote quite indepth about what a blogger is and what a blogger does in a pos ‘So You Want To Be A Blogger’. It’s amazing how many people don’t actually realise just how much there is to blogging. Fab post!!! xxx

  2. Everyone I come across seems to think blogging is easy and we just do it for ‘freebies’ I constantly feel like banging my head against the wall trying to explain it is not like that at all. They don’t realise how much time and effort things take and that ‘free’ product takes hours of work to review x

  3. Amen! Blogging is so much fun,but it’s so much hard work. When I explain to people all the things I do for one post they tend to be shocked. Don’t get me started on YouTube videos! But, I started because I love the creativity and wanted some new skills. I honestly didn’t even know you could get paid for it or get freebies (absolutely true!). I don’t blog for those reasons, I get a buzz out of creating and sharing and it kept my brain ticking over nicely when I was on mat leave. Hurrah! x

  4. Urgh! I can’t abide trolls, they’re like the jealous little bitches at secondary school but worse because they sit hiding behind their computers. Blogging and being successful isn’t easy and I’ve worked hard over the past year to build my blog up and now have to juggle that with being back at work. So fuck off trolls and find yourself something more productive to do. #coolmumclub

  5. There will always be the haters. They are in every walk of life. My son was saying that there are trolls who spend hours trawling through youtube videos just to press the dislike button even without watching. Leaves me feeling very sad that such people exist #CoolMumClub

  6. Yeah! *air punch*

Even though I know I’m new to this whole deal, I’m learning so quickly that the skills I need are far more than those I use in my regular job. My friends and family still see me as ‘playing’ or having a ‘nice little hobby’, I don’t think anyone relates unless they’ve had a go, for whatever reasons. I feel rather clever having read this post. #CoolMumClub

  7. Completely agree. I’m new to this, but my gosh, there’s so much to it! I’m currently on mat leave, but I hope to continue blogging alongside, because it’s so interesting–although not sure how I’ll find the time! #coolmumclub

  8. Great post and well said! Blogging is such hard work and time consuming and the only people who know how hard it is is the people that blog. I never knew how much work went into blogging until I started. I still struggle daily with the whole SEO apart of it. Trolls will always troll and they can do one! Bloggers are amazing!

  9. It’s a combination of ignorance, and jealousy i think. It takes a lot of work to make something for yourself, and then manage to make a living from it. Whether that’s blogging or anything else. These trolls have no idea. #coolmumclub

  10. There is SO much that goes on behind the scenes of blogging… I amaze myself that I manage to squeeze any of it in between the full time parenting lol.

Anyone who thinks it’s a doddle needs to do a day in the life of a blogger! We are all basically obsessed / nuts / slave drivers…

Fab post as always #coolmumclub HQ partner in crime!

  11. I didn’t realise the amount of time that went into blogging before I started. And I think those people who have negative things to say about it obviously aren’t bloggers because they would know about the amount of work that goes into if there were. So they can say whatever they want but I’m not listening! I’ve been blogging for over a year now and I’m still going strong!

  12. I don’t even consider myself a ‘proper’ blogger what with not having a clue about most of the things I should be doing and just posting willy-nilly and it’s SO MUCH WORK. Don’t even get me started on social media platforms and how much effort goes into those. I do it for the craic, to learn, to discover new blogs and to chit chat with lots of like minded bloggers. However, I appreciate how much hard work and determination it takes for anyone who has taken their blog to the next level, working on becoming a pro-blogger and I have so much respect for them.
I’ve had lots of jobs I’ve been qualified for and I can tell you they were in no way as demanding as blogging can be. I can only assume the troll is an attention seeking ignoramus. #coolmumclub

  13. love this! People really have no idea how much effort (and brains) it takes to run a successful blog. Yes, anyone can set up a blog, but it takes so much dedication to turn it into a money earner or something that people actually read. Ultimately, I think these kind of comments can only come from a place of envy xx #coolmumclub

  14. Until I started blogging I had no idea the amount of work that went in behind the scenes. Having an idea for a post is a start but people can’t possibly understand unless they blog themselves. I’ve learnt so much in such a short space of time, I honestly don’t believe bloggers are given enough credit for their work.
To be a successful blogger you need to be able to excel in a variety of areas as your post clearly outlines. Great post! Haters guna hate, their just jealous!

  15. I bet loads of mummy bloggers have learnt so many new skills from being a blogger. A lot of bloggers don’t recognise how much they’ve learnt or how much they know but you are all Masters of writing, editing, IT, social media, promotion…the list goes on and end. It’s SO much work – you guys get my respect! x #coolmumclub

  16. I’ve shared this everywhere it’s that blinking awesome! Finally I hope people will realise just how much I do. So many people think it’s just tap, tap, tap and I’m done! Noooo! Thanks for writing a great piece. #coolmumclub
