£1 hack to keep cool during festivals in a heatwave

The UK is preparing for a very hot summer, with temperatures expected to reach 32°C in the coming week, just in time for Glastonbury Festival 2025, and many more hot days are expected in the near future.

With this in mind, trusted ticket comparison site SeatPick has revealed some tricks for festivalgoers to stay cool during the summer heat.

How to stay cool and sleep longer in a tent

There’s nothing worse than waking up from a night of music and fun in a warm, stuffy tent. While it’s best to invest in a good-quality tent, there are two quick fixes every camper should know about.

  1. Brits are urged to utilise reflective tarps at this year’s festivals. A reflective tarp goes under and above the tent and helps to keep it cool by reflecting light or heat off it. By doing this, campers can reap the benefits of expensive tents without spending hundreds of pounds, as tarps can be found for as little as £5 on eBay. Brits can also use £1 tin foil to insulate the tent in a pinch.
  2. The second expert trick is to ensure the tent has proper airflow throughout the night. This goes without saying, but the mistake people often make is having only one. Every tent should have two vents, one on each side of the space, to let air enter, circulate, and exit. Tightening the guy lines also ensures the tent has adequate airflow.

When campers take no extra precautions, they often wake up in an overheated tent filled with condensation. Not only is this uncomfortable and sure to disturb sleep, but it also means that any belongings, such as clothes, become damp. To stop this, cover all clothes and backpacks in rubbish bags during the night.

How to stay cool during the day

  1. Electrolytes are vital salts that help with fluid regulation, muscle function, and heart rhythm. During a heatwave, bodies lose electrolytes while sweating, and this can lead to dehydration and exacerbate heatstroke. Festivalgoers should eat salty foods to help replenish lost electrolytes, particularly sodium, and consider drinking electrolyte supplements, such as potassium sachets.
  2. To cool down in a hurry, it’s best to apply ice packs to pulse points, such as the wrists, temples, neck, inner elbows, and knees, where blood vessels are closer to the skin. This helps the body to circulate cooler blood more efficiently.

Alcohol can also cause dehydration. As such, festivalgoers are urged to avoid drinking alcohol during the heatwave, or supplement this with regularly drinking water, finding shade, and eating foods that replenish electrolytes.

In addition to utilising festival cooling zones and first aid tents, these quick tricks offer a great way to stay cool at any festivals you’re attending over the summer.
