Divan beds are a popular choice for many homeowners due to their simple yet stylish design. But what exactly is a divan bed, and how does it go together?
A divan bed consists of a base which sits directly on the floor, as opposed to on legs or a frame like a traditional bedstead. The base is usually wood and features upholstered sides that match the headboard. Some divan bases also have handy storage drawers built in, such as one end drawer or two side drawers.
Divan beds go together with bolts and clips – bolts hold the sections together, while clips usually fix the drawers to the base underside.
The base supports the mattress and connects to the headboard to create the divan bed frame. But don’t be intimidated – divan beds are straightforward to assemble at home. Here’s a step-by-step guide to putting your divan bed together.
Getting Started
After unboxing all the parts, take a minute to lay them out and ensure you have all the required pieces – the base, headboard, any connecting hardware, etc. Refer to the instruction manual for guidance on part numbers.
Take care when removing packaging so as not to damage the bed parts – especially the upholstered frame. Keep all packaging in case of any problems, and carefully unwrap all parts before beginning assembly.
Attaching the Feet
The first step is attaching the feet, which raise the base off the floor. Turn the base upside down and insert the feet into the pre-drilled holes on the underside of each corner.

Gently tap the feet into place until they click in securely. Having someone assist with this step can be helpful. You can also apply downward pressure on top of the base to ensure the feet click into place if needed.
Joining a Split Base
Some divan bases come in two halves, which need connecting. Bases with pre-installed U-clips on the inside will clamp together when turned on their sides.
For link bar connector styles, match the halves so the edges meet evenly. Pass the connecting bolts through the link bar slots and into the pre-drilled holes on each base side. Tighten the link bars to secure the two halves together.

Attaching the Headboard
Now, stand the assembled base upright and bring the headboard into position at the head of the bed, ensuring everything lines up. Consult your instruction guide to see whether spacer blocks are required between the headboard and base.
Using a manual screwdriver (electric ones can be too rough), attach the headboard by piercing the fabric at the locator holes and inserting the screws provided. The headboard’s vertical position can be adjusted via slots on the back.

Making Up the Bed
Now that the base and headboard are together, your divan bed is ready for the mattress. Gently set it on top without bending or twisting – you don’t want to damage that brand-new mattress! If it’s a brand-new mattress, we recommend letting it air for a few hours after removing the packaging so any trapped moisture can evaporate.
Caring For Your New Divan Bed
To help your new divan last, flip and rotate double-sided mattresses regularly during those first few months to evenly spread weight and keep the mattress from sagging too quickly.
It’s also wise to use a mattress protector. This shields against dirt, spills, and normal wear and tear. Oh, and don’t overload the storage drawer bases. They’re made for lighter things like blankets and throws – not stacks of heavy books!
Last thing – keeping your divan clean. Every few months, strip the bed and lightly vacuum both sides of the mattress. This picks up dust, allergens, and yucky stuff you don’t want to sleep with. You can also spot clean stains with some mild soap and water.
