You’ll often find there’s a feeling that a birthday should be bigger each year, with more decorations, more activities, and basically more effort put in in general, but although that might be how it seems, the truth is that when you look back, the moments that actually stick with you are very often small and simple ones. With that in mind, here are a few ways to help make a child’s birthday more memorable (without going over budget and over the top).

Start The Day Differently
One of the easiest ways to make a birthday stand out is how it all starts, and getting that bit right usually means everything else that follows just feels so much more fun, no matter what it is. We’re talking about things like a decorated bedroom door, for example, balloons waiting downstairs, a fun breakfast that they wouldn’t normally have, or perhaps even just a lie in…
You really don’t have to do anything elaborate to make this part of the day special and unique – it just has to be something that signals it’s different and that you’ve thought about what they might like.
Add In Small Surprises
Children tend to love the unexpected, so a few small surprises through the day can make it all feel a lot more special and you aren’t going to have to do a load of organising to make it happen.
For example, they could choose what to have for dinner (or where to go for dinner if you’re going out), they could choose a film to watch, they could pick an activity they wouldn’t normally do on a school day, and so on. Or you could give them their presents one by one, which could be another fun way to keep the excitement going. Basically, it’s just something that breaks up the day and keeps them excited for the next thing.
Give Them A Bit Of Control
It’s also great if you can let the birthday child make a few decisions – it can make a big difference, especially if they’re quite young and normally just go along with whatever someone else has planned. It could be as simple as choosing where to go for a walk, what game to play, or perhaps how they want to spend part of the afternoon, and so on.
They don’t have to pick everything (that could end up being pretty chaotic, plus you’ll want to have some structure in the day to fall back on), but if they can decide on just enough to really make the day feel more like them, it’s going to help.
Make Time Feel Slower
It’s so easy to really rush through birthdays, especially if there are plans in place, but the reality is that slowing things down a bit tends to make things much more memorable because they’ll actually have time to appreciate what they’re doing and really enjoy it.
So let them take ages to open each present if they want, and spend more time at an activity they’re enjoying instead of dragging them away to the next thing. Or you could just have some unstructured play time, which is always a winner.
Keep Parties Under Control
A party can definitely be part of the day, but it doesn’t have to be everything, and it certainly shouldn’t be anything for you or the child to get stressed over – that would be pointless and you won’t end up with any positive memories if that’s what happens. The fact is that keeping things as simple as possible is what works, so that’s what you need to focus on.
You can just have a small group, a couple of activities, and some space for everyone to play, and that’s generally all you need – it definitely creates a better atmosphere than if you try to organise every single minute.
You could also include something like a station where children can do some arts and crafts, and at the end you can create your own party bag to give as thank you gifts, giving things a bit of a unique touch.
Focus On What They Actually Enjoy
It sounds obvious, but it’s also pretty easy to forget when you’re trying to make the day magical, but you need to focus on what your child actually enjoys. That’s why it’s good to step back and think about what that is, because not only is that going to make the day better, but it’ll make it easier to think of things to do as well.
For example, some children love being out and about, but others prefer to stay at home. And some want lots of people around, whereas others don’t, and so on. Basically, matching the day to them is the best thing you can do and they’ll remember it fondly.
Just Capture A Few Moments
Photos are nice to have, but trying to document the whole day and capture everything can just mean you’re only thinking about the way it all looks or what people are going to like on social media, and you won’t get to actually join in – plus, if you’re trying to pose people or make the day look like something it isn’t, it’s not going to be all that much fun.
In the end, a few natural moments are usually enough, and that way the focus stays on being present rather than trying to record every single detail.
Let It Feel Personal
The birthdays that tend to stay with people are the ones that feel like they were theirs, not some random things thrown together, and not something pulled from the internet that didn’t match up with their likes and preferences at all.
In the end, making a birthday memorable is about doing a few things that feel right, rather than over planning it all, getting stressed, and no one ending up having any fun because everyone’s cross and you’re rushing from one thing to the next. If you can get it right, the birthday is sure to be one they’ll look back on happily for years to come.
