Making the Most Out of Your Shed: Tips for Maximising Space

Most sheds are pretty simple: Four walls and roof. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things you can do to make as much use of the space available to you as possible.

While garden sheds often become the dumping ground for rarely used garden tools, old toys, and other such items, they can actually be exactly what you need to declutter your outdoor space and get things organized. In this short article, we’re going to go through some tips for doing just that, so that you can turn your shed from a clutter-filled eyesore to a hut you can’t do without!

Making Good Use of the Walls

When it comes to space-saving in sheds, shelving is your best friend. Traditional wooden shelving fitted via metal L-brackets is always a nice, easy solution, but these days, several smart options offer a solid solution, too. Consider using racks for tools as these allow your equipment to be stored flat against the wall, and don’t forget that the back of the door is a usable space you can attach hooks to for hanging things.

If you’re buying a shed for the first time, consider if you really need a window, as that’s extra space taken up that you could’ve used for storage.

Don’t Forget Vertical Space

It can be easy to forget the vertical dimension and have a ton of space up hight that goes unused. Of course, you don’t want to place things so high that they’re mostly inaccessible, but depending on the design of your shed, utilising the rafters as anchorage points for storage can be a great option.

For example, where long gardening tools used to be just propped up in a corner taking up an unnecessarily large foot print, you could decide to slide them between the beams so that they don’t take up any floor space.

Organization Is Key

You can install all the shelves, racks, and pegboards you want, but none of those are much good if you don’t take the time to properly organise.

The first consideration in this regard is to determine what you actually need in your shed, as there’s no use organising the clutter. It’s a good idea to take everything out, give the place a clean, and then ensure you’re selective about what you put back in.

For what you do add back in, desk top organisers for small items like bolts and screws are a good bet, and where you can, group items together in certain areas of the shed into their respective categories – that way, even if you have a lot of stuff in there, you’ll know where to look straight away.

Wrapping Up

Sheds don’t usually represent the most problematic spaces to set up and organise in your home, but given that many of them become harborors of mess, it can be difficult to know what to do with them. Hopefully, this article has given you some food for thought as to how to turn your shed into something with purpose!
