A freezer clean-out routine probably isn’t going to be the highlight of anyone’s week, and honestly, fair. It’s not exactly a candlelit self-care activity. But it is one of those small home jobs that makes daily life easier once it’s done. Plus, in a way it can make cooking and family meals easier and more enjoyable because at least then you know what food you have in the house.
Because when the freezer is organised, meal planning is easier, leftovers actually get used, and there’s less of that annoying “there’s food in here somewhere, but somehow still nothing for dinner” feeling. Everyone who cooks, the main home cook in the house, yeah, you know the feeling.
But anyway, the problem is that freezers are very easy to ignore. The door shuts, the food stays frozen, and everything feels fine until the drawers start sticking, frost builds up, or there’s a container at the back that’s basically caked in ice at this point. So, maybe it’s time to get it cleaned up.
Choose a Time That Makes Sense
Which should be obvious enough here. But the best time to clean out a freezer is usually before a big grocery shop. Most families will have one to two major hauls, so ideally, do it before one of those large hauls. Plus, think about it, since there’s less food to pull out, it gives a clearer idea of what’s already there before more gets shoved in and forgotten about.
And it also helps to avoid starting the job when dinner needs to happen soon, or the house is already busy. Believe it or not, though, frozen food can’t sit out forever, because yeah, it does have limits, so this is one of those tasks that works better with a little planning. A cooler bag or insulated box can help if there’s a lot to sort through. Thankfully, those are pretty cheap too.
Deal with Frost
If frost or ice has built up inside the freezer, organizing around it won’t really fix much. You see it for yourself here that ice takes up space, makes drawers harder to open, and generally makes the whole freezer more annoying to use than it needs to be. But it happens at some point to everyone and their freezers; it just happens. But you do need to know how to defrost your freezer and get rid of all the ice before you start organizing. Again, make sure to have a freezer bag or a cooler with ice on hand to move the current food out.
Check What Actually Needs Keeping
Stuff gets freezer burn, and then it tastes horrible, so no, not everything stays just fine in the freezer. Sure, a freezer can hold onto food for a surprisingly long time, especially leftovers, half-used bags, and random things bought with the very optimistic belief that they’d become part of a proper meal.
That happens, but a lot of stuff gets wasted. Again, some stuff is in there for years. If anything has ice covering it, it might be time to toss it out. And be sure to get into the habit of having food in there for less than 6 months, usually 6 months is the maximum for most foods.
