Getting a pet can be a great idea for countless reasons. Once you have one, you’ll see more than a few benefits, like:

  1. Giving you unconditional and ongoing love.
  2. Being more active when walking them.
  3. Letting you relax more when you play with them.
  4. Helping you be more social as you meet other dog owners.

But, this all comes with a lot of responsibility. You’ll need to keep your dog healthy and actually look after them. This often takes a lot more time and effort than you’d think.

It doesn’t have to be overwhelmingly hard, though. Focusing on the right areas should be more than enough to help with this. By putting the time and effort into them, there’s no reason why your pet shouldn’t be happy and healthy.

Some of these will have more of an impact than others, with seven of them standing out. They’re more than worth getting into.

1. Give Them Enough Exercise

Exercise is vital for any pet, and you’ll need to put a decent bit of time and effort into this. At least, that’s the case when you have certain pets. Cats essentially exercise themselves, for example, as long as you let them outside every once in a while. But, you’ll need to do noticeably more for dogs.

A lot of this depends on the breed of dog you have. A Siberian Husky will need noticeably more exercise than a French Bulldog, for instance. Find out how much exercise your dog needs, and make sure they’re getting it every week.

2. Practice Dental Care

Dental care can often be an overlooked area for pet health. But, it’s an area you shouldn’t neglect. Cats and dogs are both likely to develop dental issues as time goes on, and these can be quite painful. Getting them treated can also be relatively expensive, so it’s an issue best left avoiding.

Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be too complicated to do. Investing in dental chew toys can be a great way to help. They wouldn’t guarantee no dental issues, but they help to minimize them quite a bit.

3. Protect Them With Insurance

Pet insurance isn’t an area quite a few people think of, but it could end up helping you a whole lot more than you’d think. It’s always likely your pet will get hurt or develop a condition, especially as they get older. And, dealing with this could be too expensive to pay for outright. It’ll put you in a tricky position figuring out how to afford it.

If you have pet insurance, however, this shouldn’t have to be much of an issue. While you could still need to pay for a few health-related costs, these should be noticeably lower than if you didn’t have insurance.

4. Schedule Regular Check-ups

As much time and effort as you’ll put into your pet’s health, you can only do so much. At a certain point, you’ll need to get specialist help, too. That’s where your veterinarian comes in. Make sure you’ve registered with one of these as soon as you get your pet. Then, it’s a matter of having regular check-ups with them.

This lets you make sure there aren’t any health conditions you need to worry about. If something does come up, regular check-ups should help you catch them early so you’ve a better chance of treating them without a lot of stress or effort.

5. Give Them a Balanced Diet

Your pet’s diet is one of the most important areas you’ll need to focus on for their health and happiness. And, it’s already an area you could be putting the effort into. When you are, make sure their diet is as balanced as possible, with this depending quite a bit on the kind of pet you have, its size, and more.

Thankfully, this shouldn’t have to be too complicated to figure out. Talking to your vet helps you figure out exactly what kind of diet your pet needs. After that, it’s just a matter of getting the right food for them going forward.

6. Keep Grooming Consistent

Grooming is an essential part of having a pet, and you’ll need to put some time and effort into this. How much grooming you’ll need to give your pet often depends on what kind of animal it is, and even its breed. A long-haired dog breed will need a whole lot more grooming than a short-haired cat that can groom itself, for example.

Take the time to figure out roughly how much grooming your pet needs and make sure they get it. They could often end up needing more as they get older, so keep an eye out for whether they’re putting less effort into grooming themselves in time.

7. Strengthen Your Bond

People often forget about the emotional side of being healthy, and this is especially true of their pets. It’s always worth putting the time and effort into this. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be too hard, and it could end up being a whole lot more fun than you’d think. Strengthening your bond with them is a great way to do this.

And, there are plenty of ways you can do that. Playing with them, rubbing them, and similar small steps can all have more of a difference than you’d think. These are all steps you should want to take anyway, so there’s no reason not to put the effort into them.

You’ll have every reason to keep your pet healthy and happy. But, you could think this needs to take a lot of time, effort, and hard work. You might even believe it has to be expensive. It doesn’t need to be nearly as overwhelming as you could think. Quite the opposite.

Focusing on the right areas and taking a few steps should be more than enough to get started with this. While it might seem like a lot of work, it’ll be easier than you’d think as time goes on. And, you’ve no reason not to do it.
