I have never been one for store-bought first aid kits….my mind boggles at how they only ever seem to contain a fraction of the things you might actually need in a first aid kit, especially when it comes children and the adventures they seem to find themselves embroiled in! So when it comes to having a first aid kit in your home, DIY is the way to go in my book.

If I had a pound for every time I’ve had to tend to minor injuries over the last few months I’d be a rich lady indeed! With plenty of climbing trees, scrambling through fields and getting up to general mischief – that has meant plenty of cuts and scrapes. It’s at times like these that being miraculously organised enough to have a fully stocked first aid kit in your home is worth its weight in gold.

That’s why I’ve teamed up with Safe and Sound – our go-to when it comes to wound care and plasters for all the family – to provide this quick guide to creating a first aid kit for your home.

Safe and Sound

Although a first aid kit is about much more than just plasters, in my mind these are the linchpin of any first aid box. But not all plasters are created equal! We are huge fans of Safe and Sound’s vast range of wound care and plaster products – especially their new kid’s plasters range.

Did I also mention that they are also the perfect form of distraction for any bumps, cuts and scrapes? That’s because they come in an adorable choice of Dinosaur, Monsters, Spaceships and Robots or Unicorn, Dinosaur, Mermaid, Princess designs.

Perfect for children, their Kids Fun Plasters are made with a hypoallergic adhesive that is gentle on delicate skin. The breathable washproof material helps aid the natural healing process while protecting the wound from bacteria, germs and risk of infection – even in damp or wet environments.

With 16 fun plasters in four different designs, they are absolutely ideal for active small humans!

Summer first aid checklist

Obviously, you don’t want to feel like Little Miss Paramedic, but at the same time you want to feel confident in dealing with any minor accidents and injuries in the family that may require you to step into your first aid role.

A basic first aid kit should include:

  • A variety of plasters in different shapes and sizes
  • Sterile gauze dressings in various sizes
  • A roll of dressing/surgical tape
  • The three main bandages used for dressing: Roller bandages, crepe bandages and triangular bandages
  • Safety pins
  • Sterile disposable gloves
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Antiseptic spray/cream/alcohol-free cleansing wipes
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Digital thermometer
  • Calamine lotion for rashes/irritations
  • Insect bite cream or bite away
  • Antihistamine tablets and syrup for kids
  • Adult and children’s paracetamol and ibuprofen
  • Saline eyewash
  • Sterile water for cleaning wounds

If you haven’t already, it’s most definitely worth making sure you have everything you need in your first aid kit so the kids can adventure fearlessly, and have the confidence to play without worrying about little cuts and scrapes. Keep a look out for Safe and Sound’s lovely new plaster range available – along with the rest of their wound care products – from most independent pharmacies!

  1. You’re absolutely right! There’s nothing like your own kit because the store bought ones are so basic. The plasters are so cute!

  2. I am an avid believer that every mom needs to have a first aid kit at hand at all moments, in the car at home anywhere. I know my kids would totally love those mermaid design bandaids! so cute

  3. tea tree oil is my must have – antiseptic for bites stings, sunburn, cuts grazes, everything really! one small bottle cures all, so ideal for travelling

  4. I don’t really have much apart from plasters & antiseptic cream. My daughter is very clumsy so these products look great. I know she would love the mermaid & unicorn ones.

  5. eVERY PARENT SHOULD HAVE, AT LEAST, THE BARE ESSENTIALS OF A FIRST AID KIT AT HOME. LITTLE ONES HAVE ACCIDENTS ALL THE TIME. pERSONALLY I LOVE ANTI BAC SPRAYS.

  6. Tropic tamanu balm (or as it’s known here Aunty Sarah’s Green Cream), fantastic for everything, bites, stings, hives, grazes, small cuts, blisters, rashes!

  7. Thermometer, Elastoplast / plasters, plain gauze, gauze bandages, triangular bandage, soap , water, antiseptic wipes, antiseptic cream / spray. First aid box for storing items (also ease of access, etc). Cold / hot pack. Scissors, tape / safety pins. Paracetamol, aspirin. Up to date First Aid book kept inside or along with the First Aid box is ideal.

  8. If I was putting together a first aid kit I would include everything here but add smelling salts and Narcan.

  9. Antibacterial wipes and sprays, plasters, scissors, tweezers, a small magnifying mirror, bite cream, paracetamol, ibuprofen, cotton wool pads.

  10. We have a lot of things that we never use. We use plasters, bandages, tweezers, bacterial and burn creams, and paracetamol the most.
