Do You Actually Need Life Insurance?

When you’re starting to think about your long-term financial plans, there are some considerations that are bound to come up. Investing. Retirement savings. Emergency funds. Life insurance is very likely to come into the conversation, but you might think that you have plenty of time left, so what’s the rush? However, there are some factors that you should weigh into the decision before you make it, and here, we’re going to explore a few of them.

Are You Married?

If you’re part of a married couple, then it’s worth being aware of the role life insurance plays in maintaining financial stability for your partner. Given how many couples share responsibilities like mortgage payments, household bills, and contributing towards financial goals, if one income disappears, it can be tough for the remaining partner to keep up with all of those obligations. They can fall into debt or find their savings quickly drained without a financial safety net that allows them the time they need to adjust.

Do You Have Children?

A good police is one of the most important forms of financial protection for your kids. How does life insurance work? If you pass away unexpectedly, life insurance can not only help meet the costs of your funeral and memorial expenses, preventing them from putting undue financial stress on your family, but it can also cover living costs, including housing, childcare, school expenses, and more. You can even choose polices that provide funds for future milestones like university education. Good insurance can cover not just immediate costs, but also provide years of income to help your family recover and adjust financially.

Do You Own A Business?

Although it might not be as important as your family, if you own a business, then you might want to ensure that the future of your company is protected, as well. A business that relies heavily on the expertise, leadership, and income of the owner can find itself facing major challenges when they’re no longer around. You can use your life insurance to cover the transition period in your business, covering operating costs, paying off outstanding debts, and sometimes even funding buy-sell agreements that allow any partners to purchase the remaining shares in the business. The money from that sale can also support your family members.

What If You’re Single With No Dependent?

If you’re single, you don’t have any dependents, and you don’t run a business, then you might not necessarily need a life insurance policy, since there’s no one who relies on your income for their daily living expenses. However, some people do still purchase smaller policies to cover funeral costs or pay off debts and obligations to make sure that there’s no stress for their next of kin. Others will buy an insurance policy even when they’re younger and don’t yet have a family because it’s typically cheaper than waiting to buy it later.

A lot more people would benefit from life insurance than they might think. Seriously consider your financial standing and anyone who might be impacted by your passing before you decide to skip getting a policy.
