It’s already been a crazy year with all the changes and ups we’ve experienced. It seems like everything that could have gone wrong has. However, this time around, things are going to be different. Now is the time for us to take action and make changes for the better. 2023 is going to be our year of self-improvement and becoming the best version of ourselves. To help you get started with your new year, here are some new things to try this year.

New things to try this year

Learn a new skill

Do you want to learn a new skill for the new year? Whether it’s a language, instrument, or a new way to earn money, there are many ways to broaden your skillset and become more knowledgeable. Learning a new skill can help you earn extra money, learn new job skills, and make your job experience more rewarding. If you’re looking for a new skill to learn in 2023, we recommend you try a skill you’ve never tried before. An easy way to start is to look up skills that interest you on sites like Skillshare, Udemy, and Skilljar. One of my favourite tips is to search for and find new skill-learning challenges, like #NewYearNewSkills on Instagram.

Try something new

This is one that we all need to try. We can all stay in our comfort zones and stay the same person, but why not try something new and see if it sparks that fire inside of us? And while you’re at it, why not try some new foods, activities, and people? Start a new hobby, like rock climbing or painting, or head out of your comfort zone and try new types of cuisine or plan a trip to somewhere you’ve never been before. Travel is one of my favourite ways of having a totally new experience. My top tip for the latter would be to use a travel planning app like Wanderlog which is a very neat way to dream up and manage your travel plans. Try something new in 2023, and you’ll be surprised how much it can open up new opportunities and expand your horizons.

Experiment with creativity

The science shows it – creativity has a positive impact on our mental health. But for many of us who may not feel like we are naturally creative, we may not know where to start. A quick tip then to get you started is taking part in The January Challenge run by the UK-based non-profit 64 Million Artists. It involves 31 days of quick, fun and free creative challenges – one challenge for each day of the month – that everyone can participate in. Write in a journal daily

This one is a no-brainer. Why not write in your journal every day? If you’re looking to add some extra positivity to your journal, why not write about your successes? If you’ve been facing a lot of challenges, why not write about them? This is one of my favourite ways of trying to work through any big emotions or stresses I may be experiencing. Journaling can be used to help you discover how you’re feeling and what you’re dealing with. It can also help you discover more about yourself and find new ways to improve yourself.

Help someone less fortunate

This doesn’t have to be someone close to you. It can be someone across the world that needs extra support, like an elderly neighbour. With technology today, there are so many different ways to help someone with less fortunate. You can create a fundraiser, create a charity to support, or even start a GoFundMe account to support someone or something. Personally, I find there is nothing more satisying then organising a fundraiser for a worthy cause. It can be something as simple as organising a clothes swap at your house and asking for a small entry donation.

Make eating healthy and exercising a priority

For many people, this is where they lose momentum when it comes to their goals. If you want to make 2023 the year you get healthy, you need to make these two things a priority. One thing I have found has worked for me is to start offby making small changes, like eating healthier snacks like roasted fava beans or keto bars when you’re bored or drinking water instead of fizzy drinks. The small changes can add up and make a huge difference over time.

If you need a little helping hand to get off to some good habits this year, then why not check out the Beat the January Blues at home wellbeing week-long retreat. Designed to lift everyone’s spirits, starting from “Blue Monday” (16 Jan)this simple, achievable and effective Retreat will be packed with daily tips, classes, breathwork, recipes and more. Save money and pay off debt

These two things may seem like common sense, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t do them. From my own personal experience, the easiest way to start saving is to take a look at your monthly bills and find ways to save money on those bills. Sneaky subscriptions you had no idea were coming out of your account? Find and cancel them. You can also look into bill-cancelling services and credit unions to help you pay off debt faster.

Take a break from your routine

This one may seem like it’s out of character with the New Year’s resolution ideas above, but it’s not. We don’t have to keep pushing ourselves to the breaking point. In my experience this only leads to overwhelm. I find during these times I need to slow everything right down. For example, taking a break from social media, planning a break from your job, or taking a break from your workout routine when you are feeling totally exhausted.

Set yourself up for success in the future

Yes, setting yourself up for success for the future is cliché, but it’s one that’s important. My top tip here is create a to-do list and prioritize your goals based on the to-do list. This can also be done by practicing gratitude and journaling daily to help you stay focused on your goals.

Getting yourself together and improving yourself is not an easy task. It can be difficult, especially if you don’t know where to start. This list of New Year’s resolution ideas can help you get a better grasp on what you need to do to become a better person in 2023. You can start with one of these new year’s resolution ideas, and you’ll be on your way to bettering yourself before you know it.

  1. Some great ideas here! I’ve done the first three so I’ll try and complete the list. Although I do get writers cramp so cannot do the journal writing, maybe I’ll type it instead 😀

  2. I am planning on reading a lot more and also planning on learning new things. I can’t be more excited about the new year.

  3. I’m going to try and be nicer and kinder to myself, which means not constantly worrying or thinking of the worst scenario.

  4. I have a lot of anxiety when I’m in social places but I want to challenge myself this year and meet more people and be more social. I want to be a role model for my kids so they can meet good friends and feel confident around people.

  5. stress less and smile more! I have a lot of anxiety when I’m out and about, id love to try to push myself to be more socialable

  6. I’m trying to do a bunch of these including journally to track my moods and habits as well as some other things. I want to do more creative things like crafting as I have so many kits at home but just haven’t done them x

  7. I have a huge mountain to climb this year because I am having total knee replacement surgery in a few weeks which will hopefully give me more mobility and improve my time with the kids. Will be great to be able to walk to the park with them instead of in my wheelchair.

  8. I was so full of ideas and confidence to try new things this year but not feeling like it at the moment. Hopefully the will is going to return soon.
