Christmas without sugar

Regular followers of my blog will know that some years back I was diagnosed with a condition called Reactive Hypoglycemia which meant that my blood sugar would plummet to dangerously low levels after eating. As a result, I have to stick to a low-carb, sugar-free diet. I have become accustomed to this but Christmas without sugar can be a real challenge with so many incredible delights trying to catch your attention at every turn of a corner.

The thing is, it’s not like I could actually even eat any of these fantastically sugary items on offer even if I wanted to. I would be so ill if I did it’s just not an option. However, I do really miss being able to treat myself with the usual suspects at this time of year – you know, mince pies, chocolate yule logs, Christmas cakes and the like.

I am sure there are others in the same boat as me too, which is why I thought it would be useful to put together this guide to enjoying Christmas without sugar. Plus I’m going to let you into an amazing secret – a way to treat yourself whilst being sugar-free this Christmas.

Being of being Sugar-Free at Christmas

The benefits of being sugar-free at Christmas are numerous. Firstly, by cutting out sugar, you will be reducing your risk of obesity, diabetes, and other health problems associated with consuming too much sugar. Secondly, you will be helping to keep your energy levels up throughout the festive period, as you won’t be feeling the effects of a sugar crash. Finally, you will be setting a great example for your children, who may be tempted to indulge in sweet treats during the holidays.

Common Sources of Sugar During Christmas

There is no denying that sugar plays a big role in Christmas. Common sources of sugar during Christmas include cakes, cookies, candy, chocolates, and other sweet treats. These are often served at parties, gatherings, and other festive events. Additionally, many people use sugar to sweeten drinks, such as eggnog, hot chocolate, and punch.

Christmas is a time of joy and celebration. But it can also be a time when sugary treats are constantly on offer which can leave you feeling sluggish or even unwell. For some people like me, those sugar treats are not even an option.

The Key To Being Sugar-Free At Christmas

If you are looking for ways to make your Christmas sugar-free, there are many options available. Firstly, you can focus on eating healthy, whole foods that are naturally low in sugar. This includes things like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and lean proteins. Secondly, you can look for sugar-free alternatives to your favourite treats, such as sugar-free cookies, cakes, and candies. Finally, you can make your own sugar-free treats, such as sugar-free hot cocoa, sugar-free fudge, or sugar-free cookies.

The key to being sugar-free at Christmas is to have some great alternatives at hand. I recently discovered No Guilt BakesChristmas range –  delicious keto cakes and treats with no added sugar perfect for enjoying a Christmas without sugar.

As you can imagine, I was absolutely thrilled to discover their Deluxe Christmas Keto Treat Box (£60.00) which includes scrummy sugar-free and low-carb Christmas baked goods like Christmas Loaf, Ginger Loaf, Chocolate Orange Loaf, Chocolate Macarons, Glazed Nuts, Spiced Biscuits, Glazed Nuts and Spiced Hot Chocolate.

I am trying really hard to save these all until further into the festive season but they are so scrummy it’s hard! Everything is just SO good and they are some of the best sugar-free baked items I have tasted. I had honestly written off being able to eat mince pies or any kind of Christmas cake this year so am over the moon! They also have a smaller Christmas Keto Treat (£35.99) in case you prefer a smaller selection.

How to Create a Sugar-Free Christmas Menu

Creating a sugar-free Christmas menu can be an enjoyable way to enjoy the holiday season without overindulging in sugar. To get started, you can plan out a menu for the day that includes a mix of healthy, whole foods and sugar-free alternatives. For example, you could make a sugar-free holiday punch, sugar-free stuffing, sugar-free cookies, sugar-free fudge, sugar-free hot cocoa, or sugar-free gingerbread. This list goes on!

How to Handle Social Situations Without Sugar

It can be difficult to stay away from sugar in social situations, but it is entirely possible. One way to do this is to bring a sugar-free treat to a gathering which is usually what I do, such as sugar-free cookies or a sugar-free cake. Additionally, you can opt for alcohol-free drinks, such as sparkling water or tea. Finally, you can focus on the conversation and spend time with the people you are with, instead of focusing on the food.

Tips for Staying Motivated to Stay Away from Sugar at Christmas

Staying motivated to stay away from sugar at Christmas can be a challenge. But there are ways to stay on track. Firstly, you can set realistic goals and reward yourself when you reach them. Secondly, you can find a support system, such as friends or family who can help you stay motivated. Finally, you can remind yourself of the long-term benefits of being sugar-free, such as improved health and energy levels.

Resources for Staying Sugar-Free at Christmas

There are many resources available to help you stay sugar-free at Christmas. For example, you can find sugar-free recipes online, or look for sugar-free alternatives to your favourite treats. Additionally, there are many sugar free blogs and websites that offer tips and advice for staying sugar-free. Finally, there are support groups and forums where you can connect with others who are striving for the same goal.

Conclusion

Enjoying a sugar-free Christmas is entirely possible. With the right mindset and a few simple strategies, you can have a festive season that is both healthy and enjoyable. By focusing on the joy and celebration of the season, eating healthy, whole foods, and looking for sugar-free alternatives to your favouirite treats, you can create a sugar-free Christmas that is both delicious and satisfying. So why not give it a go this year?
