There is this funny moment, every once in a while, that happens when you walk into your own home and you just think, um, something feels a little tired in here. Not bad. Just … ready for a little glow up. I feel that way at least twice yearly when I have had too much coffee or I’m putting off some other work. And the most lovely aspect is that no need to spend entire nights renovating a new building or performing some kind of dramatic makeover ceremony. It will be easy enough. Even kind of fun.
1) Start At The Beginning
The easiest start for you is to simply take a slow walk about your area. Not to criticize it, but to spot it again. A room can become visually cluttered not because there is too much stuff, but because everything has gradually fallen out of place. You find some plant that somehow moved three feet to their left or some stack of the books that grew like little paper mountain. A little tidying can be like taking a deep breath in the room.
And if you would like to extend your efforts up a notch, consider moving one piece of furniture in a way you never would otherwise. You can move your living room chair up near the window the other week, and mornings feel different. Brighter. You can’t understand why your waited years to do that.

2) Small Cleanups Huge Difference
One aspect of a newly cleaned, fresh surface is a very important characteristic; it can shift the whole energy of a home. Just a bit of intentional cleaning. Even having your floors or softer surfaces refreshed can help; a friend might have told you once she had booked carpet cleaning because she thought of doing it on a whim and then spent the next two days walking around saying that her house was “lighter.” You kind of love that.
Sometimes you will wipe down the baseboards and then be distracted and clean just half a window before going back to the baseboards. Not exactly a professional system, but it can still work, and it makes the house feel cared for, which is exactly the point.
3) Add A Few Small Touches
When you begin to itch for change, it is often nothing more complex than changing pillow covers or bringing in a new lamp. Not a fancy lamp. A little bit that makes the corner feel a little warmer just by itself. Lighting is more tricky than I know at all, but even bad tries make the room feel fresh inside. A colour wall may also make a huge difference, and even bring some life into the picture.
Plants, really, too, however, including the dully sad ones. You sometimes purchase a new one, thinking it will somehow energize the older ones. You’re not entirely certain that’s how plants work, but the effect on you is real enough.
4) Conclusion
A home facelift shouldn’t be stressful. If something, it should feel like you’ve permitted yourself to experiment. Try the quirky vase. Redo the art, even if you swap it in tomorrow. Let your home feel lived in — not curated into stillness. A space that holds small traces of the person you are today feels warmer anyway. And to be honest, if your house gets a small spigot of this or that, you feel refreshed as well. Or at least a bit more settled or a bit more yourself, which is sometimes just what we need.
