As a parent, it’s difficult to know where to draw the line between digital and traditional games for children. Is traditional better than digital? When the future is digital, should you let your kids embrace it? Or should there be a balance between the two? These are all good questions to ask and there isn’t really a wrong or right answer – there’s your choice and your choice alone.

Chelsea Mamma has a similar opinion to mine, “I don’t believe that screen time is a negative thing, it can offer wonderful interactive ways to teach and entertain our children but traditional games (that don’t involve computer screens), such as card games, board games and table games, also have a lot to offer.”

Today, I’m focusing on traditional games for children and why I think these are a great addition a family games night plus, some of my favourite games to play with the little ones. I would still like to know about your thoughts regarding this digital vs traditional games battle – let me know in the comments below what you think!

Benefits of traditional games for children

Traditional games offer much more than fun family time, these games can help kids develop essential skills, such as cooperation, respect, teamwork, competition, creativity, strategy and social skills.

As this article on Lingo Kids mentions, “Quite simply, traditional children’s games stimulate their growth, physically as well as intellectually. They will also help them to make friends, what more could you ask for?!”

My favourite traditional games for children

Games tables

Anything from snooker to air hockey is always a great addition to every family’s games room. And if you think that you can only play these types of games at the arcade or games clubs, think again – Hamilton Billiards snooker table manufacturer sells a large number of snooker, pool, billiard and other games tables in a variety of sizes that will fit any sized room.

Plus, snooker is a great sport for the whole family. According to a study by Anglia Ruskin University, playing snooker can improve mental health, focus, patience and the ability to assess and manage risk.

Board games

The beauty of board games is that there are so many different ones to choose from that you can try a new one every day. Do you enjoy whodunit detective games? Perhaps you prefer to expand your knowledge with trivia games? The perfect board game is out there waiting for you!

Card games

As Mummy to Dex says “From Uno to a standard pack of playing cards, there are so many card games options to play with the family which will guarantee a good time.” If you have a standard pack of playing cards, why not play a game of Go Fish with the little ones? Or perhaps for older kids, why not a game of Bluff?
