Quick decorating ideas for an instant room update

When we’re constantly staring at the same four walls, the need to shake thing us in our living environment can become border line obsessive. But while your neighbours might be concerning themselves with complete interior overhauls and structural changes which can be eye-wateringly pricey, if you want to give things a new lease of life there are lots of quick decorating ideas you can play around with which don’t require a mammoth amount of project management or big old bank balances either.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned during the last year it’s that little changes here and there can really make a remarkable difference to a room. Wth that said I’m sharing my favourite quick decorating ideas which we’ve deployed over the last year to help you fall in love with a room again.

Be smug with a rug

In case you hadn’t noticed, rugs are having a bit of a moment again. Yes, the humble rug is back in style and is a great way of creating a focal point in a room. If you’re considering getting a rug, know that vintage faded looking rugs are the go-to right now, and why stop at one rug when you can even layer a rug upon a rug (yes really!). For the latter to work you’ll need to get a more neutral larger rug on the bottom, and a more colourful, textured rug on top (think a bold sheepskin!)

Make friends with plants

I am of the opinion that you can never have too many plants in the house. A new and strategically placed new plant in a plant stand in a boring corner of a room can suddenly add interest and greenery, and bring a whole new energy to the room. You can grab some houseplant inspiration here.

Create a feature

If you have a sad bit of wall or corner of the room which looks like it could do with some attention, maybe you could create a reading corner around a cool little side table? Or curate a picture wall on your landing? Pop up some floating shelves and assemble a display of vases or plants? Or experiment with a wall mural or some wallpaper? You could even put up some panelling and experiment with colour blocking it. And don’t forget tiles are also a brilliant way of creating a feature…it doesn’t have to be a big job – just a micro retile around a splashback with some graphic tiles could make all the difference. The possibilities are endless!

Zhuzh up your soft furnishings

Again, do not underestimate how a new throw on a bed, updated cushion covers or fresh curtains can completely tranform a room and bring it all together. Now that Spring is here, changing up your soft furnishings is a great way to bring in some lighter textures and vibrant colours to signal the hope that the new season brings. Think cottage core and chintz, bright colours and little luxuries to help you with your zhuzhing.

Light up your life

Do not underestimate the power of a well placed statement lamp. I recently switched out a very run of the mill lamp from my bedside table while was very blah and doing nothing for me, for a big old statement lamp with a beautiful ceramic base and gorgeous velvet shade. I tell you it instantly upgradedthe bedroom! The key here is to think about lighting as a focal point and look for a lamp base that is sculptured and has an artful aesthetic.

The great thing about all of these quick decorating ideas is that they are fun and don’t require a lot of time or investment so you can relax and have fun. I like to do updates in micro chunks which allows you to make a change, sit back, enjoy it and reflect on how it’s impacted the room, and on what else needs to be done.
