Have you been Aperol Spritzing yourself to kingdom come over the summer? Perhaps you’ve lost count of the times you’ve popped a bottle of prosecco over the last couple of months in an effort to blur the constant noise of the kids being at home over the school holidays? Well, no big deal right? Because that’s what summer is all about. Except now we’re in September – also known as Sober September – and most likely feeling the mother of all hangovers as it’s back to the daily grind for us all come Monday.

If you’re looking for a way to tone things down on the alcohol front this Sober September, but have no idea how or where to start or perhaps keep it going then today we’re sharing tips from Victoria Vanstone – author of Drunk Mummy Sober Mummy – on how to dial back the alcohol this September.

How to go sober this September (and beyond):

Question yourself

Stop and think before you drink. Is this the Mum you want to be?

Stock up on substitutes

Try an alcohol-free alternative. There are so many good ones to choose from out there!

Rethink rewards

Instead of rewarding yourself with wine, give yourself the reward of not having a hangover.

Get to the root

If you are questioning your drinking habits, reach out for professional support. This could be therapy, or something else. You are worthy of understanding your relationship with alcohol.

Rethinking role models

Think about the message you are sending your children when you numb out the hard days with wines. Are they soaking up your habit of leaning on booze when things get tough?

Lead by example

Think about how giving up booze could ripple through your family for generations to come.

Redefine fun

It might surprise mums to know that being alcohol-free is not boring, it’s actually you, becoming the best and most authentic version of yourself (I promise that the benefits far out weight missing out on a few girl’s nights).

Find sober friends

Whether that be in real life or a sober community on-line to offer you support – The Sober Social for Sober Curious Women is a good one.

Learn about what it is to be sober

Read quit lit and listen to podcasts Sober Awkward is the best of course (just me and another sober mum chatting about life as sober women) and absorb as much information you can about the sober curious movement. You might find that being sober is actually cool!

Final words

You’ve done pissed, and so have I, I was a social binge drinker for 28 years, and in the end… it was booze that got boring. So for you, now might the be time to try something new. Be brave and step into a new life. Whether it’s just for September and a bit longer. I promise, it will be the best decision you’ll ever make!

  1. I love the idea of Sober September. I used to be such a social drinker when I was younger. Now I am older I rarely drink unless it’s Christmas, birthdays or a rare child free night in/out. My husband doesn’t drink so we are always on the look out for alcohol free drinks.

  2. I used to be a heavy drinker in my 20s but I’ve learned that I can have a good time without alcohol. I’ve only had the occasional drink now, a handful of times in the past year.

  3. I think having a month Dedicated to being sober is great especially if it’s turned into a # month then all the companies promote their non-alcholic drinks. And drinkers become aware there are some great drinks around. I must admit i like a Gin & tonic or similar with Sunday lunch with ice ( somewhat diluter) but for my 70th birthday my daughter bought a non- Alcohol wine ( never been much of a wine lady) but it was fabulous so much so I bought one myself. Also it’s great to have at parties for drivers.

  4. It’s a good idea to have a break from alcohol every now and then. Sober September sounds great, especially with so many lovely non alcoholic drinks available.

  5. I haven’t heard of Sober September before but I think it’s a good idea to have a rest from alcohol from time to time. I drink less since discovering how nice alcohol-free beer tastes.

  6. Sober September is a great idea for those who drink a lot, or more than a glass of wine a week, though as I’m virtually teetotal (yes, despite having 5 bottles wine in fridge that I’ve had there since Christmas!), I’m pretty much doing it without thinking lol! It’s great for anyone who wants to ‘detox’ from alcohol x

  7. I think that anytime of year is a good time to think about habits we develop without thinking too much about, such as drinking. January tends to be the normal month to try to ‘dry out’ because of excesses over Christmas and New Year, so Sober September balances the year a little

  8. I don’t drink at home unless we have friends over, so this isn’t really a challenge for me, but I should definitely apply the same rule to chocolate!

  9. It is a good idea although it is not something that I would take part in. I rarely drink alcohol and September is the month I go on holiday and enjoy having a few drinks.
