Family life is nothing if not chaotic. When you have children, there is always something to do and places that you need to be. It’s lovely to see your children thrive and spend time doing the things that they love. However, when family life feels like a constant rush filled wth never-ending to-do lists, your relationship with your partner can suffer.
Even the strongest relationships can be put to the test when life is busy. Juggling school runs, work, and endless responsibilities can mean you and your partner are more like roommates than romantic partners. You may find that you spend less time together, and even when you are in the same room, the connection that you once shared is missing.
Schedule Time Together
Feeling tired and under pressure can make it hard to find the energy to make an effort in your relationship. So many couples come home from a hard day at work and find themselves emotionally and physically exhausted. This can lead to an evening of scrolling through your phone in silence as you attempt to zone out, relax, and forget about all the things you need to get done the next day.
When you are so used to each other’s presence and have spent so long working as a tag team to juggle childcare, it’s easy to forget about the person who you fell in love with. Unfortunately, for many couples this distance between them opens up so slowly and subtly, that both parties are too busy to notice it happening.
Making the effort to schedule time alone together is an excellent way to start reconnecting each day. Even if it’s just 20 minutes spent drinking tea and chatting about your days, this is an opportunity to slowly start rebuilding that connection you once had.
Talk it Through
Your partner may be the person you know better than anyone else in the world. But when you start to lose that connection, they can begin to feel like a stranger. Communication is at the heart of getting your relationship back on track. However, being able to speak about matters like your physical relationship and lack of intimacy can be challenging.
Working through your feelings with a qualified therapist can be extremely helpful. Arranging a therapy session with a professional, such as psychotherapist Adam Nanayakkara, can help you to unpick your feelings about your relationship to better communicate your needs so that you can begin to rebuild your connection with your partner.
Use Small Gestures
Small gestures can mean a lot when your relationship feels disconnected. Introducing small ways to show that you still care is a helpful way to start chipping away at the wall that may have built up between you. Holding your partner’s hand when you’re walking together or giving them a hug when they come home from work are really simple ways to show that you still care.
Re-establishing a connection with your partner isn’t easy when life is busy, but it is possible.
