Are you thinking about a trip around New England? New England comprises the US states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, and has much to recommend it as a tourist destination.

Rough Guides notes: “Boston especially is celebrated as the birthplace of American independence — so many seminal events took place here, or nearby at Lexington and Concord.”

New England is also culturally significant, having been inhabited by American literary icons including Mark Twain and Emily Dickinson. However, if you want to sample many of the area’s delights for yourself, how can you make your adventure there especially worthwhile?

Schedule your trip around New England for the autumn

You can certainly enjoy the region at many other times of year, but making your way to New England in either late September or October would be particularly recommended if, like many other visitors, you are keen to check out the autumn foliage.

“The foliage is just world-famous, and there are also a lot of festivals around the foliage and around the harvest,” Wendy Perrin, founder of the eponymous travel-planning site, has told U.S. News & World Report.

Treat Boston as a starting point for day trips

Of course, given how large New England as a whole happens to be, there is the big question of how you would be able to cover much of it especially time-effectively.

One useful thing you could do is stop in Boston. As a result of booking online, you can get the best P&O cruises that, yes, stop in Boston.

If you need some inspiration for journeys you could make from there, heed that Time Out has provided a rundown of what it deems the “17 best winter trips from Boston”.

Rent a car while in New England

The region is home to various small towns — and according to Perrin, one of the best ways to see them is to journey to them in a rented car.

“There are lots of little villages all over Vermont and western Massachusetts that as you drive through you can discover,” Perrin has enthused — and she advises that you compare car hire deals from different companies and locations in search of the best price.

Know where you can avoid the stifling crowds

Like many popular tourist destinations, New England can be a victim of its own success — in the sense that you could struggle to see a lot of the best sites due to crowds blocking the view.

However, you could leave yourself with a lot more free space if you limit the amount of time you spend in such spots as Boston, Portland, Newport, and Burlington — and reserve more time for exploring smaller towns and state parks instead during your trip around New England.

Travel around New England on weekdays rather than weekends

This strategy can work well because, in the fall (as the Americans often call autumn), weekends can see New England attract a heavy influx of tourists.

In contrast, saving much of your travelling in the region for weekdays instead can help you to avoid not only crowds but also excessive monetary expenditure.
