Why has this happened?
According to the International Air Transport Association, a worldwide trade group, Russia has been experiencing a unique and strong aviation rebound, as the only global market whose domestic air traffic last year topped that of 2019. However, the aviation sector in the country has taken a beating in the previous two weeks as a result of nations across the world imposing flight restrictions and penalties on Russia in response to President Vladimir V. The ban essentially prevents a small number of Western businesses from reclaiming hundreds of planes leased to Russian airlines. Following recent sanctions, those leasing businesses were given until March 28 to terminate their contracts with Russian airlines. With dozens of Western nations and Russia issuing reciprocal flight restrictions, analysts say the only way for those corporations to retrieve their planes was for Russian airlines to transport them to a neutral country. According to a travel notice issued by the Dubai-based Emirates airline, ‘Emirates’ partner airlines – flydubai and S7 – have halted certain flights to Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus due to the closure of airspace over these areas.’ Travellers who have booked flights to certain destinations as their final destination will be denied boarding at their departure point.’
Flights to the following locations have been suspended by Flydubai, and passengers will not be allowed to board at their place of origin. Flights to the following destinations have been halted by Flydubai until May 8, 2022:

● Odessa
● Krasnodar
Flights to the following destinations have been halted “until further notice” by S7:
● Rostov
● Stavropol
● Belgorod
● Bryansk
● Orel
● Kursk
● Krasnodar
● Anapa
● Gelendzhik
● Elista
● Voronezh
● Simferopol
Customers who have booked flights to these cities as their final destinations will not be approved for flying at their point of origin, they will not be accepted for boarding.
Route Alternatives
Several Emirates flights have been rerouted, including those to Stockholm, Moscow, St Petersburg, and certain routes between Dubai and the United States.
Travellers who plan to fly with the airline can expect extended flight durations on select flights.
“In line with the latest notifications issued by the authorities, Emirates has made minor rerouting changes to our Stockholm, Moscow, St Petersburg, and some of our US flights that are impacted by the closure of airspace over a portion of Russia and entire Ukraine,” stated by an Emirates personnel.
“As a result, flight times on some routes may be significantly longer. We are keeping a close eye on developments in the situation and will take appropriate measures if necessary. Our first focus will always be the safety of our passengers, staff, and operations.”
Etihad has also redirected certain flights from Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s main airline announced on Thursday. “Etihad continues to avoid Ukrainian airspace and has redirected aircraft away from the border region to the east and north of Ukraine by a significant distance as a precautionary measure. The safety and well-being of our passengers is always Etihad’s priority,” a spokesperson for the airline stated.
Tips for Rebooking
Customers who have been affected should contact their travel agencies or the local Emirates office for rebooking possibilities. And if a customer requests a refund, there’s no cancellation fee and Emirates will refund you. A Flydubai representative has confirmed that the flights are on hold “Until further notice”. Flydubai has stated, “We will get in touch with our passengers regarding their refund and rebooking choices.” Further he stated, ‘the flights might open up tomorrow or take longer, it really depends on the situation itself.’
On Air Arabia’s website, a comparable Sharjah-Kyiv flight search revealed no flights until at least March 31.
