Here’s why you need to adjust your home heating over the summer

When your house is in order in the summer, there is arguably nothing better. I adore knowing that you’ve done your bits and pieces over the winter, improved a few naggings bits here and there, and now have the home looking as good as new. You also need to think about readjusting your home heating over the summer.

Maybe you’ve made your house feel homey, or your home office is in such good shape your old office desk is looking tame in comparison? And what about your garden looking primed for another lush summer. Everything at home seems to be in perfect working order, right?

Well, there is one teeny-tiny area that often gets overlooked at this time of year. One thing that you rely on almost every evening (even in the summer months) that people seem to overlook entirely. I’m talking about home heating. It irks me that pretty much everyone seemingly forgets to look at and readjust their home heating at this time of year. Sure, the evenings are lovely and longer, but there is always going to be a room or two at home where a chill is ever-present if heating isn’t on. This is why you need to readjust your home heating over the summer.

If you’re reading this right now and realise you don’t adjust the thermostat and timing for your heating to be on at this time of year, even if it is just for an hour, I’ll give you a moment to stop reading and go figure it out.

Go ahead; I’ll be waiting right here.

….

Have you sorted it? Great, because there’s still more to do.

In those rooms where you love to crank the heating up, do the rounds and make sure your radiator valves are turned down low. That doesn’t mean moving the valve from 5 to 3, but down to 1 or 2. People have the misconception that valves need to be fully open and cranking to let all that lovely warm water from the boiler come through your system. You don’t want that. If you lower the valves now down to around 2, you’re asking the radiators to have any room that needs it sitting around 14-17°C in the summer evenings. Surely that’s warm enough?

And what about rooms you know will always need heat, regardless of whether it’s been blisteringly hot outside all day? That answer lies in the wonderful world of electric radiators. I’m not talking about those portable plug-ins you shuffle from room to room or have had under your desk all winter to warm your toes while working from home. I mean proper standalone radiators hanging on the wall that look just like all the other ones. The answer to home heating over the summer if ever there was one!

Electric radiators come in all shapes and sizes these days. To get an idea of what one would look like in your home, I highly recommend a little look-see at https://www.traderadiators.com/electric-heating/cast-iron-electric-radiators. They have a great range AND free delivery throughout mainland UK; ideal if you’re fed up with having to queue outside Homebase or B&Q for the billionth time this year. And just looking at them, did you ever think a classic cast iron radiator could work like that?

A classy little electric number might just look the part, in say, a lovely new kitchen extension!
