Yes, just this once, can’t a family trip not have to exhaust you as the default parent, right? And yeah, that’s the problem here because family trips are supposed to be relaxing. That’s the idea, anyway. It’s supposed to be about being in a nice location, different scenery, and no work emails. And yet, a lot of mums come home more exhausted than when they left. Like, more tired, more overstimulated, and somehow needing a holiday from the holiday.
Meanwhile, partners often come back refreshed, well-fed, and pretty pleased with themselves. So, do you see the whole issue here? Like, that imbalance doesn’t come out of nowhere, and yeah, it’s way more common than people like to admit.
But Why Don’t Family Trips Feel Like a Break?
Well, sure, on paper, everyone’s on holiday. Which sounds great, but in reality, the mental load doesn’t magically disappear. Now, depending on the age of the kids, well, they still need feeding, cutting up food, constant attention, and entertainment. But on top of all of that, schedules still need managing. Bags still need packing. Someone still has to remember snacks, water bottles, and who’s about to have a meltdown. Like, work still happens here.
It’s Probably Time to Just Let Go
Well, switching off doesn’t start at the destination; it starts with planning. And okay, that doesn’t sound relaxing, but hear it out. The stress usually comes from trying to hold everything together in the moment. Now, this all sounds generic, but please just go with it, as clear expectations matter. Who’s handling mornings, meals, bedtime routines, and logistics needs to be discussed upfront. Not hinted at, not assumed. Like everything needs to be said out loud here, basically, stand firm.
Remove Stressors that Don’t Need to Come Along
Which, yes, this does need to be addressed too. Some stress comes from things that don’t even need to be part of the trip. For example, worrying about pets while away can quietly sit in the background the whole time. Like, it makes perfect sense, they’re your furbabies, you want to make sure they’re having a good time too, while your family is away from them.
So, sorting dog boarding ahead of time removes one more mental thread that doesn’t need pulling during a family holiday. Well, of course, that only works if you have a dog, but there are cat hotels, there’s pet sitters in general (plenty of apps for that stuff too), so overall, there are options for your pets to be taken care of. Ideally, do all of this in advance. But yeah, just dropping a few expectations can make the whole experience feel lighter.
Stop Trying to be the Default Parent on Holiday
This part is uncomfortable, but important. Why? Well, so many mums stay in default-parent mode even when support is available. Honestly, it’s entirely understandable because this is basically a habit, well, it’s an instinct too. Now, even so, holidays aren’t the time to prove competence or keep everything running perfectly.
So, just letting others step in means stepping back. And that’s fine, maybe schedules slip, maybe meals are messier, but so what? Really, it’s fine, just give yourself a break, your kids will be fine.
