Improve your general knowledge with these tips

improve your general knowledge

There are many reasons why you might want to improve your general knowledge and whether it’s to do better in the family quiz this weekend or to keep up with conversations that your friends have, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that you have decided that this is something you want to work on, so here are eight ways to help you improve your general knowledge:

Ted Talks

If you want to improve your general knowledge, learn something but also want some inspiration then Ted Talks are the place to go. Even if you’re not sure what you’re looking for, you’ll find yourself learning from an expert on something really interesting.

TED.com stands for Technology, Education, and Design so you’ll find information on everything from architecture, dance, science, history, sociology, to philosophy and beyond. The talks are twenty minutes long and presented by some really interesting and great minds who are sure to give you something to think about and something new to add to your brain.

Audio Courses

Learning new things can take time and you might not have the time to dedicate to sitting down and studying, however, if you sign up to something like Listenable, you can learn new things and improve your general knowledge through bite-sized audio courses while you’re doing something else like cleaning the house.

Follow The News

Whether it’s news about who has won the latest reality show, how much the football teams have spent on transfers in the last twenty years (if you didn’t know that one then Liverpool – €1.48bn) or what’s going on in the government, one of the best ways to improve your general knowledge is to keep up to date with what is going on in the world. Read headlines to get a good idea and listen to the news on the radio and TV so that it sinks in.

Emails

Some great newsletters can be delivered to your inbox each morning and give you the lowdown on what’s going on, for example, something like Science Daily will give you the breaking scientific news and the latest scientific discoveries, then it’s up to you if you want to read on and learn more.

IF you like this idea but fancy something a little more in-depth then sign up to Highbrow which teaches you something new every day by delivering a short, 5-minute email lesson to help you learn anything from art and philosophy to business and personal development – a great way to improve your general knowledge! Lessons are delivered one-at-a-time, for 10 days, and are followed by fun, knowledge-testing quizzes at the end of each course and there are over 300 courses in the Highbrow catalog, so you’ll never run out of new things to learn.

Watch Documentaries

You can find a documentary on pretty much anything and once you get started you’ll probably find more as they are recommended to you. Check out documentaries on Youtube to start with as the ‘up next’ feature and as mentioned, the recommendations can be very useful if you want to improve your general knowledge and you could end up watching documentaries on things that you never knew existed.

Read The Bible

Even if you’re not religious, you can’t argue that the bible is full of interesting stories and lessons. More so than that though, if you want to improve your general knowledge, the bible will help you. You might not realize how many stories are inspired by bible stories or even life lessons. There will be things you know about that have come from the Bible and if you give it a go, they will all fall into place and start to make sense. It’s also useful when a quiz question comes up about something to do with the ten commandments.

Participate In Quizzes

While it’s not easy to get down to the pub to participate in a pub quiz at the moment, there are plenty of online quizzes you can do either with your friends for fun or just do them alone in your own time to work on your general knowledge. To improve your general knowledge, make sure you learn from your mistakes so if you get something wrong or a topic comes up that you know nothing about, you can make a note of it and read up on it for the future.

Watch TV Quizzes

Watching TV shows such as The Chase, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, EggHeads and Mastermind can help to improve your general knowledge, and you are entertained at the same time. Play along and make sure you listen to the correct answers and you’ll soon have a wealth of extra general knowledge that you couldn’t get anywhere else.
