A wedding expert has revealed that millennials are driving a dramatic shift away from traditional church ceremonies in favor of registry office weddings.

Pinterest search data shows an overwhelming trend toward simpler, less expensive wedding approaches.

Pinterest’s wedding statistics for May 2025 show that searches for the term ‘registry office wedding’ are at an all-time high, with 80% of searches made by people aged 25-44.

Multiple factors can influence people’s decisions to have a simple registry wedding such as financial reasons or the desire for a more intimate ceremony as opposed to having a big traditional wedding.

Budget-Friendly Beginnings

The statistics collected from Pinterest show that searches for ‘registry office wedding’ are at an all-time high over the past two years.

Millennials prioritise financial practicality, often preferring to invest in homes and a future as opposed to more lavish ceremonies. There are still some traditions that are upheld such as wearing custom wedding suits or wearing a traditional wedding dress. But the lavish ceremonies are largely being dispensed with because they are just too expensive these days.

According to a national wedding survey by Hitched, the average cost of a wedding in the UK in 2025 is a whopping £23,250. This considers a range of factors, including venue, catering, flowers, hair and makeup, and everything in between.  And that’s after you’ve bought the sapphire diamond engagement ring!

For millennials getting married, they may want to prioritize other finances such as mortgages, living expenses, and for some, family, and childcare.

For those who want simplicity but a high-end honeymoon, many choose a less luxurious wedding budget and put the money they would save towards their first holiday as a married couple.

A Private Celebration

Registry office weddings continue to rise as a result of couples seeking more authentic, personalized experiences.

Today’s couples want to celebrate in ways that feel true to their values. This can be anything from an intimate ceremony just between the couple without anyone present, or just immediate family to celebrate the monumental occasion.

Personal aspects of a wedding, such as first looks, vows, and the first kiss as a married couple, may be something that a bride and groom want to happen between them without a large crowd witnessing such a precious moment.

The Social Media Effect

Civil ceremonies are showing couples prefer practical approaches that still look stunning on social media.

Many well-known celebrities have opted for a more personal and low-key ceremony. This includes power couple David and Victoria Beckham, who got married at a London registry office in 1999, to more recent registry office marriages, such as actress Justine Lupe, who married actor Tyson Mason in a courthouse ceremony in Beverly Hills in early 2025.

Millennials still value high-quality symbols of commitment with a more personal and less expensive touch, even as they reject traditional wedding aspects.

Tobias Kormind, Managing Director of 77 Diamonds commented:

“Millennials are now leaning more towards registry office weddings because they align better with their financial realities, values around authenticity and connection, cultural shifts towards simplicity, and a desire for flexibility and sustainability.

“Social media has a massive influence on inspiration and decision-making when it comes to deciding on the best way of tying the knot most suitable for you. If your favourite celebrity decides to opt for a low-key ceremony, you may be more swayed to go down that route as opposed to splashing out a huge amount of money on a more traditional wedding day.

“The wedding industry is notorious for being extremely expensive and continues to rise yearly. When all factors are taken into consideration, a simple registry office with those closest to you or just your future husband or wife is a more sensible choice financially.”
