When we think about a bedroom, we think about something that’s upstairs, personal, very private, and tucked away. We don’t tend to think about a room that’s on the ground floor with the kitchen, living room, and any other communal space.
But when you have a growing family and desperately need a bit more room to go around, the ground floor is the easiest area to fit a whole new bedroom.

As such, here’s how to plan it into your current home layout.
Look for a Space You Can Convert
When you need to add in another bedroom, it’s typical to have a perfect space downstairs already. A spare room that you use only now and then, or that you don’t really know what to do with.
And it’s this kind of space that you can convert into another bedroom without much hassle. You just need to clear it out and make sure it’s comfortable enough to sleep in!
But what kind of rooms are we talking about here?
The garage
How often do you use your garage to store your car? If the answer is ‘once in a blue moon’, then you probably don’t really need your garage at all!
And garages are commonly converted into another bedroom, so it won’t be hard to find a contractor that can help you complete the project.
The dining room
If your kitchen or living room is already big enough to have a table and chairs in it, without compromising on any of the other space, then you don’t really need a separate dining room on top!
You can also try an open plan layout between the kitchen and living room, combining these two spaces together. This could also leave you with some great spare space you can cordon off into a ground floor bedroom.
Look at the Cost of an Extension
If you don’t already have a space ready and waiting to be used, you’ll have to look into getting your home extended.

Not to mention, it’s always going to be cheaper to extend your current home than it will be to try and find a new one.
Adding a room later on requires strict budgeting and saving up, but buying a new home requires a new mortgage, handling debt, and still trying to keep the lights on the whole time.
When you need more space for a growing family, popping another bedroom downstairs will create space that lasts a lifetime. You just need to find a place for it!
