Today I wanted to talk about the influence of social media on women’s fashion. Fashion has always had a hand in every industry and has also moved online and in the space of social media marketing or social media influencers. What started on Instagram is now heavily showcased on TikTok, as the video-sharing platform encourages users to be more dynamic and creative with their posts rather than limit them to a single or a carousel of photos. However, Instagram has been slowly catching up with their newly introduced reels, which is a blatant rip-off of TikTok.
Also, let’s not forget how the pandemic pushed users onto TikTok to entertain, create, and connect. There’s no use denying that TikTok culture has become a large part of social media, and that fashion makes up a huge portion of that. The bottom line is, the influence of social media on women’s fashion is bigger than it’s ever been before.
Tie-dye loungewear all the rage
2020 was a year where we all stayed in, and that means getting comfortable. For fashionistas, they greeted the lockdown as a challenge and while they might be home, they would be in a chaise lounge in tie-dye loungewear, with designer heels to finish the look off. Even hoodies and leggings can look glam if you have the right attitude and style.
Crop tops are being reinvented
In the early 2010s, crop tops saw an increase in popularity due to a surge in 90s fashion. But crop tops are becoming something of a permanent fixture for younger generations. Boomers wore them, Millennials worshipped them, and now Gen Zs are hopping on the bandwagon and calling it their own. Although, there are some modernization and style upgrades here and there to separate them from the crop tops of days gone.
High fashion being taken to the next level
Whether you live in a fashion-forward world or if you’re slumming it in a poverty stricken neighbourhood, fashionistas have found a way to shine and showcase their high fashion art sense. While many of these outfits aren’t practical for everyday wear, it definitely catches the eye of millions of social media users. But these innovations have also spurred fashion movements on social media, such as eco-friendly fashion.
Streetwear making waves
Perhaps one of the most commonly seen styles on social media is streetwear. Hard to define but impossible to miss, streetwear is all about self-expression that is layered and interesting to the viewer. This multi-dimensional method of dressing often borrows from culture. For instance, the street-style you see in Japan is going to be vastly different from the streets of China or England. It’s about not following mainstream fashion, but dressing up however you prefer as an individual. It is the most creative and original fashion trend in the sense, but it doesn’t have any solid definitions and is infinitely hard to replicate.
Fashion is something that is so personal to each individual all over the world and is also an industry that loves the ostentatious. Social media allows these trends and outfits to be seen and admired from all corners of the world and will continue to perpetuate the love for fashion through the platform. We anticipate that the influence of social media on women’s fashion will not lose its grip anytime soon!
