Tips for raising energetic teenagers

Do you have active teenagers full of energy that love sports and the outdoors? Since they are now a fair bit bigger, it can be trickier for you to cope with parenting children who have so much energy running through their veins. However, there are plenty of things you can do to raise energetic teenagers in the right way so they blossom into respectful, polite, responsible, and overall well-rounded adults.

Here, we have come up with some insightful tips for raising energetic teenagers with tons of testosterone.

Encourage energetic teenagers to join clubs and show that you take an interest

Clubs can help your teenagers burn off their energy and provide their week with an important sense of structure and routine since they will go to the clubs and participate in sports in physical activities on certain days. Sports clubs, scouts, music, theatre and groups are all examples of the sorts of clubs you should support your active teenage children in joining.

Remember to clearly show that you take a strong interest in their clubs or sporting endeavours, this may involve doing things like going to watch their football or rugby matches, plays, musicals, dance, drama performances, and plenty more. Unfortunately, it may feel that you are quickly becoming a taxi service for your kids, but that is all part and parcel of being a parent to teenagers that love to be active.

Through participating in well-run clubs, their behaviour at school and home may improve due to having an outlet for their energy. In addition, teenagers can make lifelong friends by joining clubs, so it is something that should be encouraged!

Make sure their life has structure, without being overly pushy

Teenagers with lots of energy need structure in their lives, even though they may like to tell you they hate it. So, why not create a weekly timetable sheet of their daily physical activities? That way, you and them can both know what they are doing each week to stay fit and active.

Communicate with their school

It is great and noble to support your active kids through their sporting interests and physical extracurricular activities. On the other hand, you don’t want their grades to suddenly start slipping due to them overfocusing on their sporting activities.

Speak to their teachers on the phone or at parents’ evenings if you ever feel their grades are dropping due to their physical extracurricular activities. This is all to ensure you raise well-rounded teenagers who have a viable outlet for their bundles of energy.

Make sure your energetic teenagers respect your home and keep the place tidy

Undoubtedly, active teenagers can be fairly messy, especially if they have big sports equipment that takes up lots of your home living space. Your active kids must respect your home and not clutter up the place. Instead, encourage them to keep it tidy, and one way you can do this is by assigning them household chores. What’s more, this may help them to let off some steam!

Obviously, don’t think about asking your teenagers to clean the whole house, but assign specific household tasks, such as sweeping the kitchen floor several times a week.

Part of keeping your home nice and tidy when you have lively teenagers living with you is getting your home storage right, it is quite amazing how many possessions teenagers can accumulate over time.

Smart home storage ideas for teenagers could include things like

  • Pegboards
  • In-built storage units
  • Draw dividers
  • Laundry baskets
  • Hanging baskets
  • Over the door hooks
  • Under-the-bed storage

Another sensible idea to keep the house tidy when you are parenting teenagers is hiring a self storage unit. Now Storage Basingstoke is a reliable self storage facility provider in an excellent location. This way, you will be able to get a self storage unit that is perfect for you and your teenage kids’ needs with seven days a week access.

Be firm but fair
with energetic teenagers

At the end of the day, you are their parent and not their friend. So, don’t be scared of making tough decisions that could upset your kids and be wholly unpopular. Being a parent of teenagers is all about the art of being firm but fair with them. That means communicating with them properly and honestly and giving them a certain amount of freedom to go out to see friends and socialise, but asserting your authority when needs be. For example, allowing your teenage children to go to the cinema with their friends, but also giving them a reasonable time they have to return home by and making sure they stay in contact with you while they are out.

Remind them about the dangers of alcohol and drugs

As much as it may give parents a real headache, teenagers can discover alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes (or vapes!) during their teenage years. Of course, as a parent, you should not encourage your children to binge drink or take illegal drugs.

You need to candidly remind them about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. One effective way you can do this is by providing examples from your life experience, perhaps it could be a good idea to tell them instances of people you have known (without providing names) who have had issues with alcohol and drugs, and how it is a terrible road to go down.

Energetic sociable youngsters find themselves coming across alcohol and drugs or people talking about them in their teens, however, that doesn’t mean there is absolutely nothing you can do as a parent. Don’t give up and try and educate them as much as possible about the importance of growing up and taking a responsible approach to alcohol and not using illegal substances, even if their mates are into it.

Be patient

It may sound a bit overly simplistic, but being patient is a great tip for parents of active teenagers with endless amounts of energy. Yes, they may get on your nerve as teenagers and act in ways you disagree with, but as long as you put in the effort, they should turn out alright in the end. Nevertheless, youngsters need time to grow into wonderful adults who understand how the world works thanks to having valuable life experiences they can draw on.

They may irritate you now, but you could well go on to form a great bond when they are a bit older and wiser. So, don’t be hasty in judging them yet, be patient and give them time.

With these top tips in mind, you should now understand a great deal more about how to raise active energetic teenagers.
