When you’ve got kids to look after, housework to do, and a job to go to, self-care can seem like the least of your priorities. After all, who has the time? But the fact of the matter if you want to stay sane in this crazy life there are some things you should do for yourself which can really help to keep you balanced and grounded amid the full-on pressure of family life.
The bottom line is, taking better care of yourself will have a positive impact on every aspect of your life.
There are things you can do for yourself, some so small you might not realise the impact it can have, that will improve your wellbeing and self-esteem. If you’re ready to make 2022 the year you look after you, then check out these five fantastic tips.
5 things you should do for yourself
Meditate
Taking the time to meditate through activities such as yoga and practises like mindfulness – learning to live in the moment and pay more attention to your mind, body and the world around you – can help to reduce your stress levels and even improve your self-control. So, good news if you have any bad habits you want to break!
Find a calm and quiet corner for yourself (we know that this can be hard if you have kids running around). You want to make sure your meditation spot as limited distractions so that you can help to keep your mind from wandering and really focus on your breathing.
Appreciate the Good Things
Many of us beat ourselves up of the smallest thing, sometimes we lie awake at night thinking of a mistake we made a decade ago.
You need to start training your brain to foreground the positive thoughts. This can be as simple as taking time every evening to write down three things that went well. They don’t need to be massive victories – any little positive you think of can help, and some days, you might even be able to think of more than three!
Improve Your Education
Advancing your education is a great way to boost your skills and get a little more fulfilment out of life. It’s something that you can do to better yourself, and it can even help you progress in your career.
Once we have children, returning to university can seem a lot more difficult. However, distance learning (such as that offered by Anglia Ruskin University) allows you the freedom to create your own study schedule that suits your needs and commitments.
Go for a Walk
Getting out of the house for a walk, even if it’s just up and down your street a few times, can do wonders for your both your physical and mental health – especially with so many companies permanently adopting a remote working model.
A brisk 10 minute walk a day can contribute to your weekly recommended exercise levels, and walking is a great way to get started if you’re not a very active person.
Smile More
Nobody likes being told to smile.
But even if it’s a little forced, smiling is scientifically proven to boost your mood! So don’t smile because someone has told you to, smile because it might make you feel better.
