Yup, you know it! It’s that time of year again when every school mum up and down the land begins to start breaking out in a mild sweat. Yes World Book Day is coming and that means only one thing – World Book Day costumes panic!
Having only just come back from half term this year, the prospect of drumming up World Book Day costumes feels even more of a ridiculous ask than usual. Come on people we haven’t even gotten back into gear after half term and now we are expected to whip up some World Book Day costumes?
OK take a deep breath mama, we can do this. We just need to get smart, lower our expectations, not care what people think of fall prey to the massive social media furor which will undoubtedly ensue come 3rd March.
If you have no idea what to do, and are no seamstress or crafty type (yup, that’ll be me then!), we share some World Book Day costumes tips, tricks and hacks from fellow parenting bloggers so you can wipe your brow and relax.
Look at what you already have
Go simple and look at what you already have at home. Many characters can be created from everyday clothes especially in Roald Dahl books. – Emma And 3
Choose characters who wear normal clothes
Think about the characters in your child’s favourite book who wear normal clothes and do a quick wardrobe check to see what you can conjure up. Previously we dressed our daughter up easily as Matilda doing this and this year we can do Miss Honey for Lher with a dress and cardi already in the wardrobe and Tiger Who Came to Tea for our with a tiger jumper and trousers set he already has! – Organised By Roo
Scour eBay/Facebook
If you’re going to buy a costume, look on facebay / eBay before buying new! Always worth doing this a few months before actual World Book Day as less people will be bidding against you too! – Emily and Indiana
Buy something you would use afterwards
Buy something you can re-use after World Book Day – for example I will get my daughter a unicorn onesie so she can dress as Oscar the Hungry Unicorn but she can use that around the house or for pyjamas afterwards so it’s not worn once and then being wasted. – In The Playroom
Add accessories and repurpose
Repurpose a Halloween costume by adding an orange plait made out of wool and you’ve got Room on The Broom! My tip is to go for adding accessories to fancy dress you already have. – Devon Mama
Check out Uniformly
Our school have joined a great website called uniformerly.co.uk where parents can sell or donate used World Book Day costumes (as well as uniform!). It’s a good place for picking up a cheap second-hand outfit. – Hannah and the Twiglets
Let them pick
Let your little one pick their favourite book (most people just find a costume) and then which character they would like to dress like the most. They are more likely to keep their costume on that way too! – Katie Floss
