Homes have the ability to accumulate items over time. As we grow up, possessions can become forgotten and lie untouched until we remember the fact that we don’t need them anymore. If clutter has been building in your home for years, it can feel legitimately intimidating to start to address it, but it can be done, and an organised approach can make it go a lot more smoothly.

Work One Area At A Time
Rather than trying to start everywhere all at once, begin with one room and, even more specifically, one cupboard, corner, or area. Take the time to fully empty that area, sorting items into clear groups of what to throw out, what to keep, what to recycle, and what to relocate. Be honest about what you actually use and need, then, when one area is finished, move on to the next. If you clean more broadly, then it feels like progress is a lot more shallow, whereas leaving one fully cleaned-out area behind feels like you’re gaining some meaningful momentum.
Create Donation Piles (But Remove Them Quickly)
When you have a pile of things you want ot get rid of, think of the best ways to get rid of them. Some of them can be simply thrown out, while others can be recycled, and you might be able to donate some of your unused items. Find local charity shops and organisations that will take them off your hands and start creating donation piles. However, it’s important to routinely clear out those piles so that you don’t just end up with another instance of lingering clutter on your hands.
Get A Little Help For The Worst Spots
In some cases, you might have a space so cluttered that it’s going to take hours, if not days, to clear it all out yourself. If you don’t have the means to transport all those items, it can take even longer. In that case, you should make sure to enlist the help of a removals company. Many of them will not only come and collect the items you’re trying to get rid of, but also know where they can be taken to be disposed of in the most environmentally friendly manner, too.
Improve The Storage You Have
It’s not just about getting rid of the clutter that you already have; it’s just as much about making sure that it doesn’t happen again. Reorganising your home means taking a closer look at your storage spaces and what you can do to expand or improve them. For instance, if your wardrobe ended up cluttered with things lying at the bottom, then adding organiser trays to it could give you a more managed approach to handling excess items. Similarly, you can add vertical storage to your kitchen so you have a place for things that go along with your current cupboard setup.
Anticipate a steady process of tidying up the home if you’re undoing years of clutter in forgotten storage spaces. You might not get everything done in one session, which isn’t the end of the world. Progress is progress, and as long as you’re moving forward, it will get done eventually.
