A long-distance relationship is hard enough when you’re living in the same country, but when your partner is overseas? Well, it can be even more difficult to make an international long-distance relationship work.

Your partner could be somebody you have met online, and it might even be that you haven’t had the chance to meet them yet. Your online romance may have developed into something deeper, despite being at opposing ends of the world.

On the other hand, you could be married to the person. You might be separated because they are working abroad, or because immigration rules have caused a split in your family.  You can learn more about the latter from these personal experiences

Maintaining an international long-distance relationship can be tough but it is possible. Here are some suggestions on making it work.

Stay in regular communication

Thanks to today’s technology, staying in touch is relatively easy. With Skype, Zoom, FaceTime, and the many other video communication techs available, you can still have face-to-face interactions with your loved one. The only problem here is the difference in time zones, but try to schedule in a time that works for you both, and make every effort to stick to your arrangements. When chatting, talk about one another’s day, each other’s interests, and whisper words of love to one another. Try and stay positive too, as while being apart is tough, you don’t want to spend the entirety of your video calls complaining or becoming emotional about the long distance.

Go on a virtual date

Although it might sound a bit silly, it is still possible to have a date night (or a date day if you’re in a different time zone) with your partner. These dates are your opportunity to have fun with your loved one, and you can even make them romantic and sexy, so again, schedule in those video calls. Check out these virtual date ideas to give you some inspiration on the kind of things you can do with one another, but come up with your own ideas with your partner when you’re both feeling creative.

Visit your loved one

As Think Aloud writes, a long-distance relationship can last as long as both sides equally contribute to their relationship. It’s that simple. If it’s possible for you to travel abroad to see your loved one, then do so. Schedule in weekends and part of your vacation time, and make all the necessary arrangements to be with your significant other. Alternatively, encourage them to visit you if it is more practical for them to do so. The time you have together may sometimes be brief, but it’s better than not having any physical contact at all. To help you with the expense of travel, these money-saving tips might be useful to you.

Shorten the distance

Could you move abroad to be with your loved one? If you have no major commitments where you are, then this could be the right answer for you. Alternatively, could your significant other move to be with you? If immigration regulations are the only stumbling block to this, you are entitled to legal advice. Immigration professionals akin to those at manchester-immigration.co.uk will be able to give advice to you or your partner. Life is never straightforward, of course, and you might still have to play the waiting game. And it might not be practical for either of you to move anyway. In such cases, continue to communicate every day, have fun together on your video calls, and travel when you can to shorten the distance between you.

Finally

At times, the long-distance between you will be hard. But try to stay positive. Make every effort with your loved one to make things work and those barriers will become less problematic eventually.
