How are you keeping fit during lockdown? Yup, we’re all cooped up inside, but here’s the thing – being inactive is bad for our health and eventually, inactivity can lead to an impaired immune system. Moreover, seeing as depression and anxiety has spiked since the initial lockdown announcement, we also need all the mental health benefits exercise brings with it too.
Staying fit and active is, therefore, the order of the day if we want to keep our immune systems strong and our mental health intact. With that said, today we’ve teamed up with Lettie King, Personal Trainer and founder of Planet Mama to share her tips for keeping fit during lockdown plus a chance to win four one-to-one online personal training sessions with her online.
11 tips to keeping fit during lockdown
Create a morning Routine
Try and create yourself a morning routine which means you get up at the same time each morning, setting yourself up for the day. Just a few moments for you before the day starts, the phone goes off, the kids burst in.
It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Maybe you can find the space to meditate for 10mins as soon as you wake up. I love the daily meditations on Calm, they’re only about 10 mins long but they always leave me feeling ready for the day. Maybe start a gratitude diary and write down the things your grateful for. If your head isin a good place you’re most likely going to be more productive.
Plan your daily activities
Either last thing at night or first thing in the morning, write a to-do-list with all the things you need to get done that day/the next. Include time for you to eat, time to move and time to catch up with friends. Then take a look at the day and split it into chunks. Planning your time and scheduling a time to work out means you’re far more likely to get it done.
Workout with a friend
We all know working out with a friend is so much more fun and just because we’re isolating we don’t have to miss out. Join an online class together. You’re far more likely not to bail if someone else is holding you accountable.
Try something new
Maybe you’ve always wanted to try a yoga class but have always been too scared, or visit a studio to check out a certain teacher’s class but it’s too far from your house. Now is the time you can. Most of the fitness world and studios have taken some offerings online. A lot of it free. So get searching and practice from the comfort of your home. My personal favs are Kindred Yoga and 1 Rebel online classes.
One hour outside.. use it!
Make the most of your one-hour daily outdoor excursion. House-run? Family-run? Just make it count. Get your vitamin D, feel spring coming, smile and let the endorphins flow.

Drink lots of water
Stay hydrated, drink a glass first thing in the morning and then keep sipping on a bottle all day long.
Make eating the main event
Plan your meals, cook together, make it a thing. Whether with family or housemate or partner. Eating properly will be key to you staying fit and healthy in this period.
Leave the snack cupboard..
…unstocked. If the naughty snacks aren’t there you’re less likely to go for them. No one needs 5x multi bags of Wotsits.
Try not to get sucked into Netflix….
and go to bed at a decent time.
Have a kitchen party
Put on some music, loud and fun. Call a friend, drag your partner, bring your kids and dance. Just be silly, jump around. Reminisce, laugh, let loose and be free. You’ll feel good for it AND burn some calories in the process. Though this one is really more for fun.
Stay away from the vino
…Or whatever your alcoholic beverage… Even if you’re having a kitchen party! So many people have told me that they’re drinking more. Although a way to pass the time, this is ultimately not going to be good for physical or mental health!
