What’s the key thing that has helped new mums with strengthening their mental health during the pandemic? Exercise! According to research undertaken by Jemma’s Health Hub, exercise was the top choice in making a person feel better which means that it’s a fantastic idea to get your fitness regime going in 2021. Get up off that sofa and set new fitness goals for 2021. But how?
Sign up to events to keep you on track with your fitness goals
Having a triathlon or a charity run or swim to work towards will help you focus. Knowing that you’ve got to be fit for a certain date will help you to become more disciplined….even during these uncertain times.

Focus on mental health
As soon as you start checking the scales each day, you’re setting yourself up to fail as weight depends on so many things. Instead, think about how exercise makes you feel as a motivator to stay on track with your fitness goals.
Do what makes you feel comfortable
If you don’t like working out in a gym or in public, do it at home. Our research revealed that 57% of mums said they felt more comfortable working out at home than in public spaces so find your happy space at home, make it your work-out zone and do it!
Do it as a family
If your partner or children are also keen to get fitter in 2021, do it as a family. You’ll motivate and support one another with your fitness goals and it’ll make the act of exercising together so much more fun and something you do to bring you closer.
Get inspired
Follow fitness influencers who inspire you and make you feel good. But beware, there are lots of people on social media who might be inclined to show a false reality so only follow people who are making you feel better about yourself and giving you fresh ideas on fitness or recipes that you can copy.
Take it slow
Don’t put TOO much pressure on yourself. Yes, set fitness goals but if you don’t hit those goals because of set-backs or injuries don’t beat yourself up about it, just move on and change the challenge. Exercise is meant to be fun and make you feel better, not worse remember.
Think about fuel
Really think about what you’re eating and drinking. I’m not a believer in diets but I am a believer in eating healthily, drinking alcohol in moderation and looking after your body.
Find an exercise that you love
Whether that’s a team sport such as football, tennis or netball – or a solo exercise you can do at your own pace such as running, yoga or an online work-out with a community like Jemmas Health Hub. Don’t try to turn yourself into something you’re not just to fit a certain norm or whatever your friends enjoy; exercise is a very personal thing and the more you love the fitness you’re doing the more likely you’ll succeed. And don’t compare yourself to others; everyone is different. About Jemma’s Health Hub
