As we approach the new year, there’s no better time to invest in yourself and your career. After all, investing in your passion sets you on a path for success down the road.
But prioritizing your own well-being is about more than self-care rituals and a positive attitude. It involves dedication, a conscious effort, and a desire to learn. When you adopt a few simple strategies for self-discovery, your career (and life) will begin to align with your values.
So let’s get started with these five tips!
#1: Set Goals for Yourself
The path to being your best self starts with knowing what that person looks like. Maybe you want to earn that diploma or start your own business! No matter what your goals are, it’s important to write them down so you have a clear picture of your path forward.
2020 is all about “manifesting,” after all. Or is that just an Instagram trend?
Either way, having concrete goals will help you determine the milestones you need to achieve along the way. With clearly defined goalposts and stepping stones, reaching your ultimate goal won’t feel as daunting.
#2: Seek Learning Opportunities
Be curious and embrace opportunities to learn! Don’t forget, there’s always room to expand your horizons and become a life-long learner.
Here are a few resources to check out:
- Books – Wow there, grannie, next thing you know you’ll be recommending cassette tapes and VCR recordings! Yeah, yeah, get your laughs in, but sometimes cracking open a good book (or sure, downloading a digital copy) is the best way to gain new insight. Go to your local library and ask the librarians to help you find books relating to your interests. From becoming a cheese-monger to pursuing a career in finance, chances are your library will have all the info you need.
- Podcasts – Since audio recording is as simple as pressing a button on your phone, there are thousands of podcasts available to stream. Podcasts are an engaging and entertaining way to learn about your area of interest without spending a dime.
- Online – They don’t call it the world wide web for nothing. There’s no doubt that the Internet offers access to boundless amounts of expert information. But the Internet is also full of other people’s personal experiences. While you should be wary of taking online testimonies too seriously, online groups are a great opportunity to gain insight into your potential field.
#3: Enroll in Online Courses
Need a formal certificate or degree to pursue your dream job? Make it official by investing in an online course. Whether you’re considering an NMLS pre licensing course or a life-coach certification, there are ample opportunities to pursue top-notch education online.
Needless to say, a formal certificate legitimizes your role within any given field. Often, this gives you the boost you need to progress in your career.
#4: Find a Mentor
Yes, this is about investing in yourself, but you can always find other people interested in investing in you, too. Look for the right person to join your team moving forward:
- Respect – A key component of a successful mentor-mentee relationship is mutual respect. Choose someone whose opinions and insights matter to you (and who treats you like an equal, not a child).
- Expertise – If you’re pursuing a path in a specific field, find a mentor who knows the ropes and can offer you specific advice and even networking opportunities.
- Care – A helpful mentor knows when to push you and when to pull you—in for a hug (metaphorically speaking, that is). Similarly, they know when to encourage you in your pursuit, and when to call your choices into question.
There are plenty of people in your chosen industry who can motivate, encourage, and yes, critique and correct you, too.
#5: Invest in Yourself Through Relationships
When you invest in yourself it also means investing in those around you. Whether they’re personal or professional, maintaining strong relationships boosts your confidence and leads to further opportunities for growth.
Additionally, it never hurts to maintain professional relationships that may lead to job opportunities down the road.

Work With What You’ve Already Got!
Acknowledge your strengths and consciously embrace these qualities as you pursue your career. When you invest in yourself, your dreams, your education, and your personal relationships, you’ll be ready to tackle new challenges and envision your future success.
If Instagram influencers are doing it, so can you—it’s time to manifest, baby and invest in yourself.
