Learning doesn’t just have to happen in a classroom. Exploring the great outdoors allows children to understand that there’s so much more to discover and understand outside of a traditional school environment. There are so many memories to be made outdoors and outdoor learning opportunities to develop a range of soft skills. With that said, why not try and find some great outdoor learning activities to try with your child? I have teamed up with an independent school in Buckinghamshire to share some ideas to get you started.
Survival Skills
Why not take your child on a camping trip and teach them some survival skills? Teach them how to build a fire for keeping warm and cooking, forage for edible food and follow directions using a map or a compass. You can also go camping, as this is a great way to immerse yourself in the experience. You could also educate them on some basic first aid, like what to do to control bleeding or what plants to look for if someone has been stung. Interact with Wildlife
Lots of kids shy away from creepy crawlies, but for those who aren’t fussed about that sort of thing, you could consider building a bug hotel. In some gardens it can be difficult for wildlife to find safe hideaways, so creating your very own bug hotel will help them out. There’s lots of tutorials online to support this type of outdoor learning, but you’ll basically just need to find lots of natural materials, such as soil, bark, woodchips, moss, straw etc. Another way to interact with nature is to get your child to create a bird feeder and keep an eye on the different birds that come for a snack.
