Having family time is something that everyone craves, needs, and can grow from. Though you may be spending tons of time with them already during this lockdown period, it is still vital to have positive experiences together, too. So, how do you do that? Well, we recommend getting outside as best as possible! Of course, stay within your designated areas, but still have some fun. We have a few ideas for outdoor activities to do as a family to have fun during the ongoing restrictions.
6 outdoor activities to do together as a family
Have a picnic
You are all going to be eating lunch anyway, so why not take it outside to enjoy! You all will get some fresh air, a change of scenery, and you will be able to go back inside and feel refreshed and rejuvenated. You can take your usual lunch, or you can make it special and pack a whole afternoon tea party! If you are afraid your kiddos are going to need something a little more their speed, don’t be afraid to ask them what it is they want to eat and drink on the picnic. It will give them a chance to participate in the conversation, and it will ensure they are able to have the best time possible!
Create a scavenger hunt
If your family has exhausted finding things within the house, it might be time to take the search outside. You can create your own list of things for them to find, or you can look online for some help as to what they should be searching for. It can range from a specific type of bird to a certain colored rock, or even a leaf bigger than their head! You can truly make it so they have to find the most random of things, because they will have so much fun searching for it all!
Go on a walk
We have been trying to get out every day for a walk to make sure we all maintain our sanity, and because we are trying not to go too wild from being inside all day. Put on your comfiest shoes and get to walking or go on a hike! Oh, and don’t forget the kids water bottle, along with your own. This way you can stay hydrated while you are out and about, and won’t have to turn back if someone gets too parched.

Tie dye a couple of items
Sheets, shirts, socks, jumpers, towels—the possibilities are endless when it comes to what you can tie dye! This is a fun, hands-on activity that will get the kiddos excited to get outside. They will be able to create a masterpiece that they will be proud of, and you will be able to help them get out in the fresh air!
Have fun with water
This one may work better in the warmer months, of course, but it is a good idea no less. You can use water guns, water balloons, or just a bunch of wet sponges. If you are finding that the rain is already making you all soaking wet, just have them throw on their wellies and let them stomp around in the puddles a bit! It will help everyone to get out some of that pent-up energy and there is no additional work involved.
Teach them a new skill
This can vary, and may include gardening, mowing the lawn, fixing the car, working on the sprinklers, etc. We know those don’t totally sound like fun, but they are valuable lessons and activities for your kids to partake in! Since you have all been spending loads of time together anyway, you might as well teach them something new while you have this time together! They will be able to learn something that will benefit them for a lifetime, and you will be able to get some help with a few of the household burdens you normally carry alone.
Whatever outdoor activities you choose to do as a family, we hope you enjoy each other’s company and make memories of these strange times that will last you a lifetime!
