As a mum, you know better than anyone just how busy life can get. Juggling mum duties with all the other responsibilities, errands, work, and tasks in your life can be downright exhausting. So add to that caring for an elderly parent and to say you’re stretched thin is an understatement. It’s something that I have personally experienced and struggled with….and continue to do so. It’s no walk in the park being part of the sandwich generation, which is why today I wanted to share some tips you can use that will help you to better juggle your mum duties while caring for your elderly parent and still have a little time left for yourself. Let’s take a look at some useful tips that will help you achieve that balance.
Start Using a Schedule
While you may not be the type of person that likes to use a schedule or daily/weekly planner, the fact is that they are helpful. They ensure you remember everything that needs to get done, it helps you organize your day and week, and it helps you to stay on track and on task. You can either pick up a traditional day planner book that you carry with you, or you may want to look into the many free planning apps that are filled with useful tools and features.
Don’t Try To Be a Super Hero
The next tip is to stop being a super hero. It is normal to want to relax and meditate from time to time. It’s a lofty goal that is just not possible, and all you’re doing is setting yourself up for disappointment. Try approaching things in a more realistic manner. This means saying no to stuff, asking for help when needed, learning how to delegate, and accepting you cannot be all things to all people at once. In other words, cut yourself a little slack.
Be Specific in the Care Your Parent Needs
Caring for an elderly parent can also be overwhelming if you’re not specific or clear on the care they need. Speak to your parent, ask them what they need, and what would make their daily life easier. Then start to figure out a way that you can help.
Look Into a Senior Care Facility
It may also be a good time to start considering a senior care facility for your elderly parent. This kind of facility can provide them with the day-to-day assistance they need while still allowing them to live an independent lifestyle. What this means is that much of the stress you are feeling about their well-being can be lifted. But depending on the affordability and how much they have saved (or you and your siblings included), you could look into luxury retirement villages for them to move to instead so there’s more peers the same age as them.
If you and your parent decide this is the best step for them, there are steps you can take to ensure the transition is smooth, that your parent settles in comfortably, and everyone feels happy with the decision.
Carve Out Time for Yourself
The final tip is to ensure you also carve out some time for yourself. This is time in which you get to relax, unwind, and do something that benefits just you. This is how you create balance and ensure your own mental health is also being looked after.
Juggling all your various duties as a mom is far from easy, but by using these tips life can be a little smoother.
