We all share the same expectation of summer: long days in the sunshine, spending time with family and friends, making memories with the kids and plenty of days in the backyard or at local attractions. For most of us, rainy day activities are the furthest thing from our mind during summer months.
The reality, however, isn’t quite so sparkly and picture-perfect. Sibling squabbles, stressed-out parents, a lack of time and of course, bad weather often push parents to the limit, making the summer holidays more of a challenge than a break.
Still, despite the bad weather, there’s plenty of fun to be had with the kids indoors on a rainy day with plenty of rainy day activities to choose from. Sunshine is never guaranteed over the summer months, so it’s important to have a few emergency rainy day activities up your sleeve for when the rain inevitably hits! Read on to explore some rainy day activities that will keep the kids busy all summer long.
Printable Activities
Sometimes the kids might need a little bit of quiet time so they can relax, do their own thing away from their siblings and give you a chance to catch your breath. Head online and you’ll be able to find a wealth of printable activity packs, colouring and fun that will keep your little ones busy for hours. If your printer needs topping up with ink, you’ll find the cheapest printer inks online, here. Make sure you stock up on paper and pens too! If you want to plan ahead, consider printing off packs to take with you to restaurants, cafes, or to take to their grandparent’s house when they go to visit.
Go Swimming!
Why not make the most of the wet weather and make a splash indoors instead? Heading to an indoor water park or swimming pool is a great way to spend a rainy afternoon, and you may find that it’s not as busy due to the bad weather. From slides and water toys to wave machines and practising their water bombing – who cares about the rain when you’re wet anyway?
Head to The Movies
Sure, you can stay indoors and watch a film on the TV, but why not make the most of it and have a fully immersive experience instead? Head to an early showing and there’ll be plenty of seats to choose from. You could keep costs down by bringing your own snacks and treats too.
Try Some Arts and Crafts
Is there anything more quintessential than arts and crafts on a rainy afternoon? You might want to stock up on supplies, so you have everything you need when the bad weather hits. You can keep things simple with some poster paints, brushes and sponges, or break out the glitter (if you don’t mind the mess), glue and stickers. You could challenge the kids to create a model or give them free rein to create whatever they want.
And finally……
Baking
Not everyone is a fan of family baking, but that’s ok! Whether you get the kids to help you make a cake from scratch, or you buy premade cookies for them to decorate, it will certainly pass the time – and they’ll have made their own snacks for later!
