5 fantastic facts about female fertility

female fertility

Fertility is a very interesting concept to be aware of, and it shows just how wonderful and powerful the female body truly is. In this guide from a fertility evaluation clinic we share five amazing facts about female fertility to show how amazing it is!

1 – You are born will all your eggs

When females are born, they are born with all the eggs they will ever have. No more egg cells will be produced during a woman’s lifetime. As they grow older they will lose these eggs naturally, but when born those with ovaries will have between 1 and 2 million eggs.

These eggs become important when a female starts puberty and enters their period. By puberty age you’ll have around 400,000 eggs, and you will lose on average 10,000 of these eggs for each period.

2 – An egg cell is released every cycle

Each cycle a woman goes through means an egg cell is released, called ovulation. When this egg does not reach sperm then a woman will enter their period which lasts between 5 and 7 days. In conceiving the egg will fertilise; sometimes two egg cells can be released which is when twins can potentially be conceived.

When ovulation occurs outside of your normal period cycle this is called an anovulatory cycle. This is actually more common than you think as not everybody exactly tracks their menstrual cycle.

3 – There are only 6 days in a woman’s menstrual cycle when you can conceive

It often feels like crunchtime when you’re trying to conceive, as there are only 6 days to ensure an egg becomes fertilised. These six days in a menstrual cycle include the day of ovulation, when the egg is released, and the five days prior to your ovulation day. Your biggest chance of conceiving will be when you aim to have sex on one of the two days before ovulation, or on your ovulation day.

4 – Your health and diet can have an impact on your fertility, but not as much as you’d think

A lot of expecting mothers or those looking to conceive will be spoken to about their diet, eating habits and other lifestyle factors like smoking or alcohol consumption. These can all have an effect on a woman’s ability to conceive in a general sense, especially if you’re a smoker or a heavy drinker.

For those recommended a change in diet it will be of course wise to follow the advice of doctors. There can be some great benefits to your lifestyle and general health by doing so, as well as the potential benefits to your fertility. More focus should be prioritised on those that smoke or drink lots of alcohol as opposed to unhealthy diets.

5 – Women aged between 25 – 30 are the most likely to conceive

This is the usual period where you are likely to conceive if you are looking to become pregnant. After you reach 30 your fertility window tends to wind down, reaching a lower likelihood past the age of 35. It’s important, then, that you know the best time to prioritise when you would like to really raise children whether you’re as a couple or as a single parent.
