Every so often the internet pretty much explodes after the launch of the next big thing as far as pregnancy is concerned. Whether it is a new maternity wear line or some exercise to keep you fit during your pregnancy, there is no denying the fact that they always have us all hooked; pregnant or not. These trends usually promise an easy breezy pregnancy full of laughter, fun, rainbows and fairy dust; and all the testimonials sure do help sell the story. Unfortunately, pregnancy is not a walk in the park and no one exercise or fad diet will ever change that.

However, there are a few trendy things that you can add to your mummy-to-be to-do list that will make the bumpy ride a bit more enjoyable, which includes the watermelon during pregnancy trend. What sets this apart from the many scams online is the fact that each and every one of the benefits promised is backed by actual scientific research. Without further ado, below are 6 amazing benefits you have to look forward to if you take watermelon during pregnancy.

Relieving nausea, heartburns and morning sickness

Every woman who has ever been pregnant can tell you that morning sickness and heartburns are probably the worst part of the first trimester. The super sensitive vomiting reflex is also not something to look forward to with all sorts of random smells and sights triggering intense bouts of nausea. Watermelon has been known to help reduce these annoying symptoms of pregnancy allowing you to enjoy your first trimester in peace.
In addition to the healthy compounds in the watermelon including water and natural sugars, regular snacking helps to reduce the symptoms and associated discomfort.

Staying hydrated all day every day

Staying hydrated during pregnancy is one of those things that as a mummy-to-be you simply cannot afford to compromise on. Watermelons come in particularly handy  in this case. This is because these beautiful fruits are 92% water. With a moderate and regular serving of watermelon during pregnancy, you can rest assured that you will remain sufficiently hydrated for your sake and for the sake of your baby.

No more muscle soreness and joint aches

Watermelons are rich in mineral and other trace elements. These include magnesium, potassium and copper. Magnesium and potassium in particular are very important when it comes to maintaining integrity and promoting functionality of muscle tissues. During pregnancy with all the extra weight you will be carrying around, your muscles are sure to give up on you at one point or another. To help reduce the pain and soreness, you should take some watermelon. The minerals help promote muscle relaxation therefore reducing the tension and associated pain. The minerals also come in handy when it comes to dealing with joint stiffness and immobility associated with pregnancy.

Antioxidants for improved immunity

Taking watermelon during pregnancy is also a great trend to follow if you wish to benefit from all the antioxidant properties. Antioxidants identified in this fruit include vitamin C and a compound referred to as Lycopene. Detoxification has several benefits for you to look forward to as the future mother. However, there is probably none as important during pregnancy as improved immunity. This is because pregnancy in and of itself is an immunocompromised state which means that you need as much help as you can get protecting yourself. The watermelon antioxidants cover everything from UTIs to something as simple as a common cold.

Healthy mama; healthy baby

Watermelon might have a lot to offer you as the mother but you are not the only one who stands to gain from this amazing fruit. It is rich in vitamins and minerals that are very important when it comes to fetal development in the mother’s womb. Consumption of watermelon during pregnancy therefore ensures that the baby gets as much raw material as is needed to build a strong and healthy body.

Complements the pregnancy skin glow

Finally, watermelon during pregnancy is a great natural and passive way of taking care of your skin. We have the combination of high water content, rich vitamin supply and presence of antioxidants to thank for this. That way, your skin remains hydrated and toxin-free for the duration of the pregnancy and long afterwards.

The bottom line

In conclusion, taking watermelon during pregnancy is a great idea. There are many foods that women are advised to avoid during this crucial time but it is safe to say that watermelon is not one of them. Therefore, whether you want a nice cold watermelon smoothie or you prefer to eat it as it is, there is no denying the fact that watermelon belongs on every pregnant woman’s diet list.
